No.

Guitar Center never had a right to check receipts. They instituted some bullshit system that withheld the receipt until you were at the out door to try to fool people. They got their ass kicked for that policy and stopped it. Not really a big deal, the last time I tried to walk out of there with a Stratocaster in my pants they didn't need to check a receipt to notice.

LOL. You're in their store. They have a 'right' to do whatever they want, within the confines of the law. 'Receipt, please' does not constitute 'illegal search and seizure' or whatever you want to try and lump it in with.

And it is very much still policy at my local store. You get a receipt for every transaction. A guy at the door checks it and stamps it.

It's not to avoid someone walking out with 'a Stratocaster in their pants.' It's to combat the ease with which someone could walk in, buy a pack of guitar strings or some such, then peruse the rest of the store and throw other trinkets into the same bag.

Assuming you take that checking a receipt for a large item is a given. Would you get mad if someone asked to see your receipt as you walked out the door with a used amplifier or something?

Give me a fuckin' break here.

When I am asked for a receipt I usually give the person a 10$ bill!

Unless it is at Costco where they have people who are paid to take your crap and still check the reciept!!

Just like when I am asked to show my ID to see if the credit card I am using is mine! I appreciate that so much that I have been known to give the clerk a $20 bill!!

Retailers can ASK to see the receipt...but they can NOT force a shopper to comply with said request.
While we might understand WHY they would want to see a receipt...theft DOES happen, unless/until a law is passed that requires me to show a receipt, I'm not going to do so.
Why not? Because I don't HAVE TO SHOW THE RECEIPT.

Think I'm stealing? Call the cops.

Okay, then please explain to my poor little malfunctioning brain how one random search without cause differs from other random searches without cause? Why do you cede your constitutional rights the moment you walk into a Wal-Mart? And please explain it in a way that won't make everyone here laugh at you.

http://www.pbs.org/tpt/constitution-usa-peter-sagal/rights/
The Constitution and the Bill of Rights only limit the actions of the government, not private parties.

Is WalMart a government entity?

ROFLMAO!!!

In the long and colorful history of ATOT it would be difficult to find a single sentence that was nearly as stupid or patently wrong as that. Your mommy must be proud.

They do not have a right to do whatever they want. They do not have a right to check receipts. Period. Shopkeeper's Privilege only extends to cases where they have a good faith belief a theft has occurred. Not showing a receipt in most definitely not probable cause and If they lay a finger on you for not showing a receipt you own them. Well, I'd own them and any person intelligent enough to understand their rights would own them. You'd just bend over and take it.

I'll show it because it's not my nature to cause trouble over, or object to something so minor. But on the other hand inspecting your paying customers as they leave the store is a pretty dumb loss-prevention strategy, if in fact that is what it is.

If there a nationwide lithium shortage?

Doesn't matter if they're a government entity. You're protected by the same laws that prevent people on the street from performing anal cavity searches on you to check if you have their missing car keys. Forcibly detaining someone without cause is illegal for everyone, for you, for me, for the police and even for freaking Wal-Mart. What part of your brain was damaged to get you to believe that you waive your rights by walking in the door of a business? They can't frisk you in aisle 7, they can't x-ray your pants in aisle 14, they can't bend you over an exam table and pull out a rubber glove in the employees lounge and they can't check receipts at the door without a good faith belief that you have committed a crime. You do not have to prove your innocence to be allowed to leave a business without a search. Detaining people at random is just as illegal for them as it is for police. Are you really incapable of grasping that?

You just equated "may I see your receipt" with an anal cavity search on the street.

So..yeah, go do that RMA.

I usually stop, look them in the eye, smile, and politely say "No, Thank you." or "No Thank's!" when they ask for a zip code, email, receipt, etc.

Not from any fear of privacy violation or anything like that. I simply enjoy the awkwardness of it all.

I will typically stop if I have just bought something too big to fit into the bag. But I've also realized that you don't have to stop and once you get out the door there is nothing they can do anyways. I did work at Walmart for about 5.5 years while working though college, I'm familiar with the companies policies regarding not following someone out the door.

Yup. They can't stop you from leaving. I don't understand all the angry butthurt about this.

if its a place that always does it, yea. No big deal.

If I'm walking out and the beeper goes off cause the employee didn't scan the tag, I'm not stopping. Chase me if you want but I paid for my stuff, you didn't do your job.

I show the receipt. If they can stop assholes from shoplifting, it keeps my prices down. Shoplifters cost us honest people money, so I hope they do catch some of those pricks.

I show my receipt because I am not a self-righteous neckbeard that gets off to sticking it to the man.

Folks that bitch about showing receipts are probably the same ones that argue with radical preachers that post up on college campuses.

The only thing that I get pissed about is those door tags, it pisses me off when they don't deactivate and then you set off the chime infront of 5 strangers, it would be funny to say, "Ok, you got me" when it goes off and see where things go from there.

This happens at costco.

Because they have good prices, good service, and I trust the not to fuck it up, I let them look at the receipt and count to make sure I didnt steal crap when I leave.

First, they asked for my receipt. I said no.
Then, they asked for my papers. I refused.
Finally, they sent me to the gas chambers.
