You just bought something. You are headed out the exit. At the exit, there is a store employee asking to see your receipt - where he/she will look it over and count the items in your cart/hands.

How do you respond?

EDIT: Enjoy my poll!!

Edit: you should still be able to add a poll.
Thank you KT!

I show them my receipt. No idea why people get so damn bent about such things.

Point at something behind them, let out a blood-curdling scream and run. Either that or just show them the receipt... because why the fuck wouldn't I?

Depends on if the inspection was part of my membership.
Membership = look in my bag
No membership = move out of my way

Meh...at Costco, it's part of the membership agreement...so I show the receipt. Any place else..."Piss off. If you think I'm stealing, arrest me. My lawyer needs the money."

It's not the stores fault so many people steal & ruin it for the rest of us.

I don't show, unless it's agreed to before-hand as in Costco. At Fry's I just walk by and pretend the guy isn't there.

What is at the base of the outrage people display when asked to show their receipt? That they're being treated like potential thieves? I understand why they treat everyone like thieves. A good percentage of the people who shop there probably ARE thieves. No matter how honest you think you are, the retailer you're shopping at will never know that. You're just a face in the crowd like all the others. Now show me your goddamn receipt.

I'm more annoyed when I notice that a store's low-paid employees could care less. I walk out of the store with an unbagged item and have a fleeting 'why did I even pay for this' thought, as my purchase price clearly must have included an extra tax for the stores unchecked theft losses.

That.

Buying a Costco or BJs membership you agree to their terms of service and inspection is one of them. Other stores no contract exists and they need a good faith belief that I've robbed them to search me. They can call the police in which case I'll own their ass or they can get out of my way. You wouldn't submit to random house or car searches from the police without cause, why would you accept them from a greeter at freaking Wal-Mart?

I've never had anyone ask to see a receipt (other than at Costco of course) but I suppose if someone asked I would just show them the receipt. I would be a little pissed off by it too.

I can't believe this many people really have a problem with this. It's not an accusation of theft. For many stores, i.e. those with multiple departments having their own registers located throughout the store (this includes Walmart), it should be mandatory.

The only place I can think of where it is actually is, is Guitar Center. They'd probably go out of business if they didn't have that kind of accountability, given the store structure. And the mandatory checking ensures no one gets butthurt because 'omg, you totally didn't check that OTHER guy's receipt!'

No.

Guitar Center never had a right to check receipts. They instituted some bullshit system that withheld the receipt until you were at the out door to try to fool people. They got their ass kicked for that policy and stopped it. Not really a big deal, the last time I tried to walk out of there with a Stratocaster in my pants they didn't need to check a receipt to notice.

You're equating checking a receipt on exit with a random search by the government?

Go RMA your brain. It's not working properly.

Okay, then please explain to my poor little malfunctioning brain how one random search without cause differs from other random searches without cause? Why do you cede your constitutional rights the moment you walk into a Wal-Mart? And please explain it in a way that won't make everyone here laugh at you.

This bothers me more than it should. I don't know why it does but it does. I'm not rational in this.
