Athlon 64 3400+/512MB/15.4" screen.

Looks pretty good to me. No rebate, and that is a huge factor for me. Don't care much for Best Buy, but I am getting tired of waiting for a deal on an A64 with no rebate.

Not hot, but a decent deal. Gateway quality is so-so, tech support is lacking (no toll free #). Discrete graphics and good CPU make for a good workhorse

I'm thinking this comes from the e-machines line. Gateway never had any AMD processors before they acquired e-machines last year.

i'll never buy another gateway PERIOD

Edit for clerification:

Called their tech support and the tech lied to me to try to get me to send my tower in. I'll never deal with a company that lies to me on the phone (this was before I learned more about diagnosis of computer problems)

that has the same chassis as the emachines m6805/7/9/etc. i like mine, although it has a mobility 9600 64mb instead of the x300 . the 2nd sodimm is probably hidden inside like the emachines series, which is a pain in the ass to upgrade.

used m6809's with 3200+ and dvd+-rw go & xp home go for about $750-$800 used.

If you want something a little lighter they had the Compaq v2424 for $899 in their add this week. I went and got one, great little laptop. Turion 64 1.8GHz w/ 1 mb cache (even though the box says it's the 512kb), and the ATI chipset. So even though the graphics are integrated I can run Call of Duty at 1024 X 768. 14.1 widescreen, 512mb, 100gb, DL-DVDRW, and of course built in wireless. Battery is also good, got through Star Wars: Episode III on only 3/4 of the battery. Really happy with the build quality too, it feels a lot sturdier than the Gateway's and Acers. Never would have thought I would have ever bought a Compaq, but I'm really happy with this little guy.

Gateway actually did use AMD chips back in 2000 (maybe 2001) when Intel could not supply enough chips.

As soon as Intel got caught up, they dropped AMD like a hot potato.

Hmm. Turion has better battery life. But it has the smaller screen. (Really, I would prefer to avoid shared memory architecture, but I don't think that is possible in this price range.)
