Reminds me of the prelude of WWII, Germans sinking civilian ships... that was in the ocean and this is air.. that was Adolf this is Vladimir... Why cant all the civilized world get together, pin point his location and nuke him from orbit, maybe we can avoid WWIII. We let go of Hitler and WWII happened, lets try something new this time.

And holy shit. Terrible analogy.

That's true. Most intrinsic guerilla forces aren't going to have weapons capable of harming commercial air liners cruising at the upper limit of the operating envelope.

I wouldn't say it had to be a russian at the trigger, but one likely recently gave enough training for them to fire the weapon and likely is still in the area giving support.

It seems extremely likely that this was a Russian battery, under russian control that fired on what they believed to be an enemy Ukranian fighter jet. They were wrong. The Russians have got themselves in a mess here. It will be very difficult for them to say that the rebels were in control, but I'm sure they will. I for one am not fooled. The "rebels" are basically paid agents or acting russian military at the sharp end of the stick. The politicians and other folks in the East are going along with them because they want to get the riches that are being promised by the Russians. This is what happens when you conduct asymmetric warfare over a region you don't control.

My bigger question is what the hell is wrong with Malaysian Air? The CEO needs to step down and they need to rethink their business model. It's obvious to me that safety is not their top concern. I'm not sure why anyone would be flying even near to a war zone that has long range Ground to Air missile batteries in place. That is unbelievably stupid to the point of criminal negligence.

If these were real rebels with just shoulder fired missiles then they wouldn't have been in range. This conflict is different because the "rebels" are supported by russian forces with advanced weapons, like the vehicle mounted SAM battery that took down this flight.

BTW, the FAA banned US flights over that area a couple of months ago: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/faa-prohibited-us-airliners-ukraine

I guess you missed the part where it's a major air route and all the airlines were doing it?

Well, he is right. 30,000 feet is five and a half miles up, I wouldn't have thought there was much risk either.

Yeah, but why make the assumption that they wouldn't get access to those capabilities from some outside group?

Because real rebel groups never have access to vehicle mounted SAMs. Only modern militaries do.

Ukraine's state security chief has accused two Russian military intelligence officers of being involved in the MH17 crash, Reuters reports, citing "intercepted phone conversations" between the officers.

SBU chief Valentyn Nalivaychenko said he based his allegation on intercepts of phone conversations between the two officers.

"Now you know who carried out this crime. We will do everything for the Russian military who carried out this crime to be punished," he told journalists.

The purported telephone intercepts have been posted to YouTube (Russian), as have past recordings of alleged conversations between rebels, some of whom are accused of being agents with Russian agents.

In the recordings, men nicknamed "Demon", "Mayor," and "Grek" panic and curse as they realize they've shot down a passenger plane and killed civilians, describing to each other the "bodies of women and children".

The authenticity of the recordings, however, cannot be confirmed.

Right, but it was well known that the 'separatists' were basically Russian military/backed by the Russian military.

This one's different... It's an open secret that Russia's probably supplying heavy equipment and skilled personnel. And the fact that they're right next to Russia makes it so make easier to provide all of the above. It's also known that separatists "acquired" a number of well equipped Ukrainian military bases at the onset of this charade. They've also have shot down at least two Ukrainian military aircraft very recently -- and proceeded to use it as propaganda.

In the good side, at least we know where this particular Malaysian airliner went down.
You don't understand. This disaster might seem bad, but if one of the passengers had a bottle of shampoo with more than 4 oz of liquid in it, it would have been immeasurably worse.
:awe:

This is really so sad, but some of the humor in this thread is so dark it's funny.
Help. :|

This will die down in the next few weeks, nothing to see here. Events like this occurred in the past several times and nothing much has come out of those events in the past.

McCain has already declared war. Lol

In the end, Russia will make it seem as if it were a group of people acting on their own. Plausible deniability.

Sure. The FAA banned US flights over the area because of this. The other companies were just being dumb.

Yikes. Ukraine probably thought it was a Russian military plane or something. Or maybe there's more to it and it was intentional. Sucks that innocent lives are dragged down into this crap.
