The new board made the new changes in violation of state law - without public notice or comment, as well as a breach of contract. May become a test case of how far "government official" immunity extends to individuals deliberately violating the law.

Also, meanwhile, the new board is adding millions or perhaps tens of millions of dollars to its salary pool (lawyers, accountants, consultants, support staff) - with no apparent budgeting or staff approval or public review requirements? And a threat to increase taxes on Disney to pay for all of them... taxation without representation, a favorite GOP policy.

That's how Big D rolls.

I'm thinking that residents of Florida should sue DeSantis for any costs to the state of Florida for his unlawful actions in his attempt to punish Disney for exercising their 1st amendment rights. He is not representing the people of Florida, but is entirely out of bounds in his attack, and obviously representing his own interests. On the bright side I do believe he has successfully sabotaged his political future.

When Republicans say "small government" they mean simply eliminating local control of D areas not less government intrusion into people's lives.
Oh, I have a great slogan they can use! "One people, one country, one leader!" It really pops, doesn't it?

It's simple enough for them to remember, and I'm sure they would think it was quite clever and catchy. Ignore the fact that it's calling for authoritarianism...don't look at the man behind the curtain!

Seriously though...I could visualize many lower-IQ (or just shitheaded) republican voters thinking this was a good slogan.

Literally the lawyers for Florida and the newly created district are clowns that don’t know how the law works.

This is all political theater. I agree with whoever said that Florida will lose and then say we tried but the woke courts stopped us. It’s useless and costly redmeat for low information maggots that don’t question what happens or bothers to find out the eventual outcome.

It was definitely an odd choice to pick a fight with a widely beloved brand who is also your state's largest employer. Also I think DeSantis isn't playing the game right. If this were Trump he would be insinuating that Mickey Mouse was molesting kids behind the castle or whatever.

I'm not sure what these guys don't get about how to fight Trump. You do not act like Trump in the hopes that people like Decaf Trump more than Regular Trump. You run against him by saying 'I agree with the guy on hating gays/black people/immigrants/etc. but the problem is Trump keeps losing. I'm like Trump but I win.' Then when Trump says he didn't lose in 2020 you point out that he's not the president, but you're the governor so even if the Democrats are rigging elections it didn't stop you, because you aren't a loser.

This will not only be effective because Republicans want to win, it will drive Trump totally insane, which will cause him to act even more erratically.

For a man so heavily anti-abortion, he sure seems intent on terminating his presidency chances before they were viable.
For a man so heavily anti-abortion he makes a strong case for being able to predict the future of your child. If such technology existed prior to him being born, his daddy would have gotten a coat hanger.

Great up to date analysis of Disney vs Low-Wattage Ron.

Bottom line: Can Disney win against DeSantis?

Schumer: I think they have a very good chance of winning the retaliation aspect of the suit. They also just want a return to the status quo. I don’t think they’re looking for damages and I don’t think they want them.

Jewett: Yes, Disney has a chance of winning. Like any court battle there is no guarantee, but the lawsuit brings up serious constitutional questions and provides the outline of the evidence for the charges that seem pretty clear and factual on the surface. Despite what Governor DeSantis has said, the lawsuit is not just political.

Andersen Jones: Yes, Disney has a quite robust claim here.

Low-Wattage Ron strikes again. Republicans are now admitting they are using the conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court to their advantage.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed into law a measure making child rape subject to the death penalty, defying a United States Supreme Court ruling.

"In Florida, we stand for the protection of children," DeSantis said at a Monday press conference in Brevard County. "We think that in the worst of the worst cases the only appropriate punishment is the ultimate punishment."

But, in 2008, U.S. Supreme Court justices issued a 5-4 ruling barring states from imposing the death penalty for the rape of a child, when the crime does not involve a child’s death. The court rules that applying the death penalty in such cases would amount to “cruel and unusual punishment.”

DeSantis, though, has said he thinks the current conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court may be willing to revisit the earlier ruling.

"We think that decision was wrong," he said at the press conference. "This bill sets up a procedure to be able to challenge that precedent."

Gonna be funny when the first application of this is to a GQP county official.

Low-Wattage Ron can't handle losing. He really screwed up the "voter fraud" victims lives. Now he's doubling down as usual to strike back.

In its first nine months, the new unit made just four other arrests, according to a report the agency released earlier this year. Critics say the low numbers point to the overall strength of Florida’s electoral system and a lack of sufficient evidence to pursue further charges. Nonetheless, as he gears up for a possible presidential run, DeSantis is moving to give the office more teeth, asking the legislature to nearly triple the division’s annual budget from $1.2 million to $3.1 million. The Republican governor also pushed through a bill ensuring the statewide prosecutor has jurisdiction over election crime cases — an attempt to resolve an issue several judges have raised in dismissing cases.

...

Statewide prosecutors have already moved to exercise their expanded authority under the new law granting them the ability to pursue election fraud cases. They have filed motions in both dismissed and pending cases - citing the “remedial legislation” - and arguing the charges should be adjusted to reflect the change. It’s unclear whether the legislation can be applied retroactively, but defendants and their attorneys are on guard. Washington’s lawyer said the state is appealing his case.

What the hell for? Waiting to see if he'll suddenly be adding people to the department that are secretly his buddies, and somehow funneling that money. I'm just wondering how he can justify the increased budget when they didn't find jack shit. Of course, who in FL is going to scold him or argue?
