Mayo on hamburgers

I think that almost every non-fast food restaurant I have been to, by default, puts mayo on their burgers (If I remember, I will ask they they leave it off. I prefer ketchup or BBQ sauce).

While eating burgers at homes (mine and others) and various BBQ's, I cannot even recall mayo being offered, let alone anyone actually putting it on a burger.

Have you also noticed this? Do you seek out and purposely put mayo on your burgers? And, what gives with restaurants making something that does not seem to be all that popular a default in their service style?

Can't stand Mayo, love just mustard and ketchup, or BBQ sauce. Hold the tom and lettuce, add green olives if they have them. Cheese is a must!

Ya not not sure why they insist on adding mayo, never once at a BBQ did someone put it on or say hey did you want mayo on it.

I like ketchup AND mayo on my 'burgers.

Or - bleu cheese and mayo (specifically: miracle whip, in this instances)
Regular cheese of some sort? Then both ketchup and mayo.

I put mayo on homemade burgers. Mayo and ketchup mix to form fry sauce, the most delicious condiment outside of Secret Aardvark habanero sauce.

This. Too bad pretty much every burger/sandwich shop here puts it on everything. It's impossible to find a premade sandwich here that doesn't have mayo on it.

Wendy's has the best burgers, IMHO, but dayum, they're EXPENSIVE. I'm too cheap to spend $5 for a burger, no matter how good it is.

Mayo on a beef burger is very French. I think it is done in an attempt to enhance the feeling of "creamy richness" of the meat. I'm not opposed to mayo on a burger in principle, but it's just not something I'm drawn to do.

If I go to a non-fast food restaurant, I don't look to order a burger. Outside of some semi-upscale place where premium burgers are their featured specialty, my take is that ordering a burger in a restaurant that offers a cornucopia of more . . . complex . . . offerings constitutes a huge failure of your culinary imagination.

This is what I've been putting on my burgers lately:

Lettuce, ketchup, lots of ground black pepper (after it's cooked) and avocados.

If I have no avocados left I make a cheeseburger with pickles, lettuce and ketchup.

Sometimes tomatoes. I also like onions but I haven't used those lately because I don't want too many toppings and it all falling apart when I bite into it.

But one reason why you might not see too many BBQs have mayo available is that it just seems hard to apply vs ketchup. Sure they have squeeze bottles for mayo, but let's be honest...those never spread the mayo evenly across the buns.

Really? I've never had mayo put on a burger by default at a restaurant. I have chosen to put it on a burger before, but to me it's just "meh". Please for the love of god, though, don't put cheese on my burger. Nothing ruins the flavor of the meat more than a cheap ass slice of American cheese that tastes like plastic. Yuck.

Mayo on a spicy chicken sandwich is acceptable. On a burger, it's mustard and ketchup or BBQ sauce.

I have one Hardee's (was a Burger King) by me in Michigan, but there are not many here.

The Burger Kings are all dropping like flies around me though, like 5 have been closed i think the closest one is about 15 miles, where there is 30+ McDonalds and Wendys inbetween.
