I've already diagnosed the problem to be the video card. (was a Geforce4 ti4200)
So i went out to buy a new card... bought a AH3650 (model number different cuz i'm in asia?)

anyway, i put in that tank of a video card, and now my system is stable, but i get weird... not artifacts... but let's say i were to close an IE window, the border of the window would remain on the screen .... is it lag or what? dunno if something's wrong with the motherboard itself.

my system is super old ...
athlon xp2200
768 mb ram (3x256 mb)
2 hdd (maxtor 80gb and seagate 200gb)
380 watt seasonic power supply
msi motherboard
audigy 2

wondering if anyone could tell me what's wrong?
thanks!

Is your windows install as old as your machine? If so you really need to start from scratch again. Windows shouldn't degrade over time, but unfortunately it doesn't know that.

Are all the fans working? Is the inside of the machine clean and free of dust? If not you should got to work on it with some compressed air, a vacuum cleaner, an old cloth, and a bottle of white spirit.

If neither of these things fix it then try stressing the machine out and see what breaks. Run Prime95, superpi, 3D games, etc and see if they crash. Then you can narrow it down by checking memory and hard disks etc individually.

hey thanks for the response!
ha running windows xp sp2
and i already did a reformat after i put in the new video card

all the fans are working (have one air intake in the front and one out the back)
and i did clean out the machine somewhat when i put in the new vid card, but i'll do a more thorough cleaning. dust in the agp slot would cause this problem right?

thanks for the suggestions
hope it can be resolved soon!

I assume you have the latest video card drivers installed, if not start by Downloading the newest from the nvidia web site. Then use the Device manager to uninstall the existing drivers. Restart and let Windows "find" the new hardware and then steer the hardware install wizard to the new drivers location and let it install.
