MBM & SpeedFan vs BIOS temperature discrepancy... ???

I'm having trouble with temperature readings. Have an A64 3000+ with MSI Neo4 motherboard, Thermaltake Silent Boost K8, Arctic Silver 5. Case is wide open as I just installed this new system.

Motherboard Monitor gives me temps of 38C, 127C and 98C. (the MSI model is not an exact match in the MBM listings)

I tried SpeedFan, which gave me 98C for the CPU temp. Started it again, got 37, 35 & 22.

The BIOS reports 38C and 39C for the system and the CPU. The Silent Boost heatsink is almost cool to the touch, certainly not hot or very warm.

The MSI CoreCenter applet that came with the Motherboard reports 37C and 35C (CPU cooler that system), but sounds an alarm regardless of what I do with the settings. Then, if I start up MBM, the CoreCenter changes its readings to match the MBM numbers.

The system runs fine so far. Any help on what I can do to get reliable temperature readings would be appreciated.

Yes, it's the right BIOS. I don't believe the high temperature readings. I just think the apps looking at the sensors are not aware of all the new versions of all motherboards. The MSI CoreCenter applet is a POS as far as I can tell. It acted the same way on my brother's new MSI motherboard. Never gives the same readings twice, and changes it's numbers to match Motherboard Monitor's numbers when I start that program. MBM does not list this exact motherboard version (says K8Neo Platinum & all revisions), & may be wrong because of that.

Since I posted this topic, SpeedFan has been reporting system & CPU temps of around 35C & 37C, matching the BIOS readings. Maybe the first reading by SpeedFan was a fluke?

But MBM still reports 127C for the CPU, and 0C for the system temp. I've been running this system for several hours now, and neither one of those temps seems credible. I think the CPU would have crashed & burned aftyer 5-6 hours at 127C (260F), and a 0C system temperature is also unlikely in the 90-95F heat this week in Michigan.

I think I'll re-seat the HSF, & see if that changes anything. I just want to be confident of the temperature readings. Any other reliable sensor readers out there?

Yeah, SpeedFan seems accurate. It matches my BIOS readings so that's good enough for me.

MSI CoreCenter is a joke. It always tells me my CPU is at 127 degrees and alarms like crazy... I laughed the first time I ran it.

Your temps seem just right. I have an A64 3200+ on a MSI RS480M2 motherboard and get temps pretty close to yours (actually a little higher) when idle according to SpeedFan.

Thanks Trizik. I'm going to install Linux now, & use lm_sensors & gkrellm to verify the sensor readings. This seems more reliable than any other sensor detection software I've ever tried.

That CoreCenter is a clown. MSI threw a bunch of 'utilities' on the motherboard CD. Not sure if any of them have any value at all. MBM just doesn't have the right specs for this board.

My system is still running fine, SpeedFan reports 37, 35 and 23C for temps right now. Corresponds to the BIOS readings.

Have installed Mandriva 10.2 x86-64 bit Linux OS. Gkrellm reports the same temps as the BIOS and SpeedFan. So, the A64 3000+ is running 10 degrees C or more cooler than my Athlon XP 2500+.

i have just acquired a msi neo2 i865pe p4 board and the mbm page states that the readout is 4C off on this board, which is weird because i replaced a different i865pe based board and the readouts were dead on with the bios, wonder if it is mbm or msi?
