The lesson, of course, is to stop doing business with MBNA. I had two completely unknown charges--one in October, one in November, total of about $115. They were charged to a card that had actually been cancelled when I switched to a non-student account. Still went through, of course. They would not take care of anything by phone--I had to write in separately each time and even then had to get stern to get them to close the account.

Anyway.

MBNA has a service very similar to Amercan Express' PrivatePayments that generates a unique credit card number for each transaction. Check it out:

http://www.mbnashopsafe.com

If you don't have an AE Blue Card but have any sort of MBNA credit card, be sure to use MBNA Shop Safe, especially when you buy things on the Internet. It's absolutely free.

AFAIK, Discover also has a similar program but the problem with Discover is that not every merchant takes Discover.

Lastly, if you're a debit card user, heed my advice. Stop using the debit card for online purchases. Most debit cards offer similar protection against fraud as credit cards, but the thing about a debit card fraud is that it'll wipe out your bank account instantly (whereas with a credit card, you simply don't pay the bill and initiate an investigation). It'll be at least a week before you'll get your balance back. I just experienced the first credit card fraud in my life (with my debit card). The crooks totally wipe out my bank account. Just want to help you avoid the mistake I made.

My Amex Blue had an unauthorized charge of about $99 from "Payday NOW, Florida".
Had no clue what it is. Anyone here had similar charge? Filed dispute with Amex.

IMHO, MBNA is an organized criminal enterprise and I will never again do business with them. They are organized to defraud customers and potential customers and former customers alike. They are the prototypical of the screw-the-small-customer corporation - anything that I can do to return the favor to them will be a pleasure. MBNA = scum of the earth.

It's a visa/mc/federal regulation that you have to dispute it in writing, they weren't being d!cks.

Sorry if I seemed to be crapping (which I don't believe can be done in Hot Deals, IMHO). I didn't want people to start cutting up their MBNA cards and ruining a company with which I've had great luck.
I do think that anyones POV on this board is valid, and simply saying things like "don't click" is weak. We don't have to agree, but we do have to respect each other.

I'm glad to hear that most people are having no crud-charges, and I wish luck to those who are.

Welll, this is interesting. The exact strange charge that appeared on my American Express student Blue Card account has appeared on my MBNA Master Card account.

I know my information was most definitely compromised on the 'net. But who? I'm guessing it might be Buy.com since I have used this two cards at the company and they usualy store credit card info there (though I hated that and wondered why they gav no option to have it removed). The other company I could think of was Tiger direct, but I never used my student card there, so it is less likely they. The last I could think of is Staples.com 'cuz I have used virtually all of my cards there. I'm so disappointed in buy.com if it is they who did this. :|

Anyway, I have to get this taken care of at both American Express and MBNA. The exact same fools did it twice with exact same charge calling it "payment solutions" and on accounts I have not placed charges with lately; in other words, they used my inactve (for about three months) accounts. :| The charge comes supposedly from a Swiss *company*. A region and *company* I have never had any dealings with. :| Anyone elese get this exact same charge from the exact same *company*? The charge is $14.95; what apears to be the name of the supposed company is "AG BAAR"; and the transaction is described as "payment solutions". This is my first time getting hit with strange charges and twice, worst of it all.

I'll be contacting both MBNA and American Expres to get it taken care of and obtain new cards for both. Or I might just close my American Express Student account.

someone has been using my credit card--dont know where they got it....
I recently was charged twice by earhtlink.net on my credit card-->today i get a piece of mail with my apparent userID that i registered.
It was ppoytinger6
now, does anyone think the asshoole who used my credit card used his actual common ID for this?
I found a ppoytinger registered in eBay and one who registered for SETI@home on february 1st this year.
Anybody got any suggestions about how else i can find info about any ppoytinger people?

BUMP! I was just looking at my MBNA NetAccess and noticed a temporary charge of $1.00 from Psycho Gear LLC - Scottsdale. Doing a little sleuthing around the internet I came to find out PyschoGear.com is registered to someone in Scottsdale. Never been do their website in my life...Called up Customer Service and got the card replaced. They were pretty good about it, but I still gotta dispute the charge if one besides the temporary one ever appears.
