My pc harddisk and motherboard bios is infected with MBR memory resident virus...

If I want to save the data on the hd infected with virus,
is it safe to connect the infected hd to another machine and run a diagonsis on it and try to save it ?

will the virus spread to the another machine with hd and motherboard which has no virus ?

If anyone has experience dealing with it or has info on how to deal with it..
Please reply my post..

many thanks

Yeah, unfortunately, if you connect the hard drive to the other computer, even if you don't turn it on it'll get infected. In fact, you should probably not put them near each other. However, you can get rid of the virus pretty easily. Look for the jumper on your motherboard that clears the CMOS, put the jumper in the alternate position (it's very important that you don't move it back; if you do, it won't do anything), and boot the computer up. Voila! No more virus!

I doubt it

clearing jumper and battery will not help in this case

From my limited experience..

Viruses cannot spread if you connect it to another computer unless you
1) Boot off it
2) Run ANY files off it

so, disconnect that HD and wack it into another computer (making sure it won't boot from it!!!!). It that virus is a windows virus, see if your antivirus has a dos version (like Norton) included with the windows one and load it up (of course with the latest deffinitions) on the working computer. DO NOT TOUCH ANY FILES ON THE VIRUS INFECTED HD. Run a full scan (files, zipped, fat tables etc..) from the good HD to the stuffed up one. Should fix it.

To fix you motherboard, go on an un-infected computer and make a boot disk. Go to your motherboard manufacturer's web site and download the BIOS image (make sure 100% it is the same models as yours, that means 100%!!!!) and the bios flasher, normally comes with some sort of instructions on how to do this. Copy these files to the boot disk.

Make the boot disk READ-ONLY. Try and boot from it, pressing F8 or whatever to go into command prompt and follow those instruction on how to reflash your motherboard bios.

Another reason why you should always have an up to date anti-virus on your computer...

if you have linux, you could boot mounting everything read-only... then burn the files to a cd
this is the wrong forum, btw
