I didn't see the rebate online.. is it B&M only, or do you maybe have the link that we can use?

InnoculateIT is very good. I remember PC world magazine rating it against the others and they rated the old obsolete 4th version against the just released Norton and Mcafee. Even though version 5 had been out for 3+months. It still did very well. I wouldn't even take software from McAfee even if they paid me. It's not worth the problems they are known to give you. The best defense against virii are routine backups, and knowledge.

I grabbed this and McAfee Uninstaller which is also the same deal where it's free after mail in rebate. I had virusscan on my Win2k system for all of 3 hours and was noticing performance taking a big hit. Also noticed many crashes with the virusshield running. My system is very stable otherwise with the *many* other apps I have on it. I removed virusscan and performance is back up and my system is stable as before. I checked the newsgroups and found tons of postings on the same topic and many are swearing off Virusscan completely. The product is buggy in that it's unstable and hits the performance of the machine in a bad way. In addition to this many state that McAfee's support has been horrible in attempting to help with these issues.

As for Uninstaller the jury is still out on that one. I have it installed and don't notice any performance hit as of yet. I also haven't really used and tested it more than the basic install though either.

At any rate I thought some might be interested. Luckily the rebate on the virusscan makes it free or I would be arguing with my local Best Buy to return this piece of crap.

(For those curious, all updates to virusscan available on the web were applied with no improvement whatsoever)

Thanks guys, I just downloaded the Innoculate AV. I had so many problems with Mcafee in win2k that I would never recommend that software to anyone. These AV programs should all be free anyways.

Stay far away from McAfee.
Turned my perfectly stable machine into crap under 98.
Would also cause my machine not to shutdown properly.
Took it off and installed Norton, not a single problem since.

Ditto.

McAfee bogged down my system and gave me random crashes. Adding memory did not help. I use InnoculateIT now. No problems.

My father put Norton on his system, and it bogged down. No crashes, just made it run slow. I upped his memory to 192MB and that solved the problem.

I run ZoneAlarm/InnoculateIT/ActiveX Cookiewall in my systray. All three are free and are great.

If I download Innoculate and install on win 98 what would be the best way to get rid of Mcafee?

Well, you could shoot him... but they've been crackin down on that lately. I say we put him & Peter Norton in a room together with spoons & let em have at it.

I have been using InoculatePE for almost a year now. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! A friend of mine had 5 active viruses on her system, McAfee didn't even catch them. I ran InoculateIT on her system and they were detected, and cleaned in a few short moments. Also, uses FAR LESS resources than McAfee did.

Also, just use the uninstall in add/remove programs to get rid of McAfee. Then use regclean of equivelant to get rid of the left over keys. Should work.... should.

Had crappy performance on my system lately. Never realized that Mcafee was the problem. Quit Mcafee and my performance problems are gone. Uninstalling that and putting InoculateIT instead. Thanks for that link.
