Mcafee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.0i + Spyware Module

My university offers this to students free, for personal use at home. I am traditionally a norton user, and I'm faced with a delema. My NAV subscription just ended, and I have three choices, use the Mcafee Enterprise which I get for free, use a free antivirus program, or resubscribe to Norton.


Also i am concerned about the Mcafee spying on me. I did some googling and it appears that the enterprise edition has some centralized control functions etc..... Does that mean they can see where i browse? or see what spyware i might pick up?

Any advice you guys have would be great. thx

we offer VSE8.0i at my school... we don't include the spyware module though, but I'm not sure on this. The "centralized" control functions you are probably referring to is the ePolicy Orchestrator, which needs to be installed separately if you want the functionality. You don't need it to run VSE8. You can think of EPO as reporting significant events like virus detections, to the EPO server. It can record basic information about your computer, like IP and MAC address, but I don't believe it can log your browsing habits, nor does it cantain any other type of spyware, unless you consider the logging of antivirus events as spyware.

We use VSE8.0i too, but I'm not sure if it has the spyware module with it (it does detect some spyware, but I put this down to extra things in the sdat file updates). Is there any way to check whether I have it installed?

I find its generally pretty good. My only issue is that the on-access scanner becomes quite intrusive on slower machines when you access large files (especially zip, cab, and other such files), even those that are only a few megabytes. Ok I'm running it on a PIII 1GHz machine at work, but there is sometimes a noticeable lag on quite powerful machines.

Alright thanks guys, i may go ahead and try it. One thing I miss however is the norton control panel.
