I disagree with some of McCain’s views. He admitted letting advisors convince him to pick Palin over Lieberman was a mistake, but is legacy is positive, such as - seeing what he went through in Ken Burns Vietnam series, and his advocacy for restoring relations with Vietnam.. He is and deserves to be treated as an American hero.

RIP...

McCain has asked both George W. Bush and Barack Obama to eulogized him. Both men who defeated him in his presidential bids. Speaks volumes to the character of the man.

Would be great if Carter could make it there, too. Imagine the collection of all living presidents there to see him out.

Short of one of them being on the other side of the globe, I'd imagine Bush Sr, Clinton, Bush Jr, and Obama all there out of respect for the man.

So sad. Even as a converted liberal I am going to miss him greatly.

RIP, he acted with honor and respect in his campaign against Obama and most importantly was a class act in defeat. Disagree with his policy choices but he did truly love this country and was a real patriot who actually understood the potential sacrifice our men and women in uniform could be called upon to make.

Although I think some are praising McCain a little too much, considering many of the shitty positions he's voted for over the years, he still lead a mostly honorable life and is a respectable war veteran, something Trump could never claim for himself. RIP.

I disagreed with a lot of his positions (especially cheerleading the Iraq War aka Bush War II) but feverently agreed with a lot of other positions he took.

He was something that is always rare-a true statesman, and also something that is becoming increasingly rare, a true patriot (as opposed to the pols that drape themselves in the flag-like Donald's flap about the NFL players). If only our President had even 5% of the integrity and character McCain had, the future prospects for the USA would be far greater.

you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't harbor a little respect for McCain, no matter their personal political beliefs. So I believe even from the most die hard liberals here, there's a nugget of respect for the man, so this would and should be a time of remembrance and reflection, if only to honor him for his sacrifices during Viet Nam.

You don’t have to agree with someone to praise the quality of their character. If you only respect those you agree with most you don’t truly respect anyone.

A real American. RIP, Mr McCain

The McCain family publicly dis-invited Trump from attending any services for the Senator. It would definitely be interesting to see that, considering it would be a public breach of his and his family's wishes.

I'd tell Trump the same thing. Trump's pettiness and compulsive urges to disgrace and embarrass his chosen enemies, last of which when he refused to mention McCain's name in the Defense Spending Bill that was dedicated in his name makes Trump out to be exactly what he accuses his perceived enemies of..

Trump being his own worst enemy since he took office would have, pre-Trump, crippled any other president bar none yet here he is, still being the wholly incompetent, petty, spiteful name calling foul-mouthed jerkoff and about popular as the day he took office.

This is the present day Repub Party. Imagine that.

RIP.
Was wondering why so many seem to get this same cancer? Ted Kennedy, Beau Biden, and John McCain.
I think it is cell phone use? It's just very odd....
And they put the phone to their ear because using speaker phone wouldn't do it for security and privacy if your a Senator. Nor would using a bluetooth headset because that possibly could be hacked into.
When you consider the length of time each day they have the phone up to their ear, and the rate of this type of brain cancer, well it seems more than just a fluke it is not cause by cell phone usage.

Another thought...
If I understand and remember, John McCain ran against Obama in 2012?
And if had John been elected in 2012, Sarah Plain would have been his VP.
And if McCain had been re-elected in 2016, and I doubt Donald Trump would have challenged McCain in 2016, then John McCain would have died in office August 2018.
And so..... Sarah Plain would now be president.
A little food for thought.

I always thought John McCain deserved to be president, but did not agree with most of his politics. Or his choosing Sarah Plain as a running mate.
But still, if anyone did deserve to be president, John McCain certainly did.
He defended Obama at his rally when Obama was called a Muslim, he conceded with grace after losing in 2012 to Obama, and once John realized his choice of crazy Sarah Plain was a huge mistake, John stuck it thru knowing too well he would lose to Obama.
So John definitely was a man of honor.
The problem was, his social values were still stuck back in the 1960's.

He had a good long life, and achieved much.
Who could ask for better?

This proud and honorable AMERICAN alternately inspired and infuriated me, but there is no doubt as to his courage and integrity. He was a warrior who endured torture and degradation in the Hanoi Hilton few of us could have. He refused to go home when he could have. He ran an honorable campaign against Obama.

I can't help but mention that our current President is a disgrace to the human race. If we didn't know beforehand, when he said he preferred heroes who weren't captured and NOTHING happened to him, we should have known then that the yahoos who support him had the very same lack of integrity that Trump does.

John McCain was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy when he was shot down over North Vietnam. My father was a Lieutenant Commander and combat veteran of the proud United States Navy as well. And my Dad was a life-long Republican. I want to believe he's already welcomed Lt. Cmdr. McCain at the heavenly gates . . . and that both are awaiting Captain Bone Spurs lower level accommodations with appropriate schadenfreude.

Anchors Aweigh, sir!

Brain cancer is fairly common-there are a lot of connections between the body and brain, lots of blood flow etc for cancer starting elsewhere to spread. My father died of essentially the same path as McCain-skin cancer spreading to other systems (lymph system for my dad) then to the brain.

As far as cell phones, I don't think my father every used a smart phone, rarely any type of cell. McCain was rather famous for never progressing beyond a flip phone, only sending a few emails his entire life, etc.

As far as Palin, that would be a scary alternate universe. It does assume she would stay in office-she couldn't even last one term as governor.

I usually didn't agree with McCain's positions, but he seemed to be a real patriot at heart, not just a flag waving nationalist. May he RIP.

Not to side track too much: melanoma does have a higher than average rate for cancers of spreading to the brain, but it is still melanoma. McCain had a glioblastoma, which is not melanoma; this is an important distinction, as there are several therapies that seem to work for melanoma brain metastases, but not so many therapies for glioblastomas.
