Toyota has previewed the supercharged version of its new Aurion V6 large car that will next year tackle Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore sports models head-on.

Labelled the "Aurion Sports Concept Car", it was revealed this morning by Aussie basketball superstar Lauren Jackson and Toyota Australia designer Nick Hogios.

The standard Aurion V6 large car, which goes on sale October 30, also made its motor show debut after pricing and specification levels were announced mid-month.

The production version of the Aurion Sports Concept is due to go on-sale mid-2007. Developed locally by TRD Australia - a division of Toyota Australia - about 1500 per year will be built at a plant in Melbourne.

Pricing is expected to be positioned around the $50,000 mark, although Toyota senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner refused to be drawn on the subject.

Toyota's press information on the car also refused to be specific about whether the engine would be turbocharged or supercharged.

However, it is common knowledge that the 3.5-litre V6 is being supercharged to produce approximately 240kW (up from the standard Aurion's 200kW). The sports model will also have a six-speed automatic transmission.

It retains front-wheel drive, but sports suspension and an aggressive tyre and wheel package is being developed to cope with the additional power and torque outputs.

"The whole intent is we need to bring some excitement and inspiration to the brand," Buttner said. "This will be our first foray into this market with other models to come down the track."

Purely an exterior design exercise, the Aurion Sports Concept includes integrated front and rear air-dam diffusers, a two-tier wing, 20-inch dark charcoal alloy wheels glass-infused mica metallic red paint, metallic grey body cues and blacked out glass.

Other special features include a floating grille frame with embossed mesh insert and twin exhaust pipes integrated into the rear bumper.

Toyota's only other new product reveal this morning was an update of the top-selling Prado heavy-duty SUV, which now employs a new-generation common-rail direct-injection turbo-diesel engine.

It goes on-sale in November. Toyota refused to discuss pricing or specifications.

240kW = _____ Horsepower ?????

Looks pretty sweet though - I'd drive it! FWD sucks but other than that.

SC will most likely be on the TRD options list. There was one for the previous gen 3.3 as well IIRC

Waaaaay too expensive, who do they think will be buying it? Add 7K and you got BMW550 with 360hp and RWD.

Sweet. I like the look better than the stock camry, with the exception of the spoiler and the mismatched grill. But the fact that it doesnt have the ugly broken nose grill of the US is excellent. Now all they need to do is get rid of those other two doors, and make it AWD.

I can't imagine 320hp through the front wheels. How the hell can they manage that kind of torque steer without gimping it off the line? Most FWD with only 250ish HP are all over the place...320 would probably steer you directly into the next lane.

How is a (presumably heavy) 4 door FWD automatic V6 sedan with a wing on it - supercharged or not - going to bring "excitement and inspiration" to the brand?? Toyota still doesn't seem to get it.

Now a new Supra or MR2, on the other hand...

yeah i should have read the article, it says it's mostly a TRD product.

320 HP is a hair low for SC on top of 270 already, but they probably just used a bigger pulley for less boost and to retain warranty.

If toyo makes the SC kit for cheaper and my accord gets blown up somewhere along the way, i might have to get a camry.

Well I think this is one where GM and Ford cars stomps the crap out of the Toyota

they are both RWD, offer a manual trans, look better IMO, have more power, and the Ford is $5k cheaper.

woa that looks cool! a lot of people still want FWD, so why not give FWD dudes (better for all-weather conditions) a bit more power? Do all performance vehicles HAVE to be RWD? A lot of people like the civic SI, yet it's FWD. I think modern chassis' and suspensions make a FWD car near comparable to a RWD car. Of course, that's just what I've been told and read around, and I will probably be proven wrong by RWD fanboys w/ their fanboist arguments

reason being is traction becomes a big problem when you have too much power on FWD cars.

Not exactly a lot of snow in Australia so not much of a reason to worry about all weather traction.

Lets see.

I could get a RWD, 360hp 6L V8 (LSx based V8), 6 speed auto OR manual sedan. Or a RWD, Turbocharged 330hp 4L I6, 6 speed auto OR manual sedan. Both are cheaper than the Toyota by $5-7k.

Let me think about that....... well, no thinking needed really. Go away toyota

Oh, and the last time I witnessed settled snow at sea level was '86, it lasted only a day. I did drive through slush a few years back but that was up in the mountains......
