I think "ick", but to be honest it's pretty practical for things like burgers and sausages. Probably better than the crap they use for hot dogs, at any rate.

If the taste, texture, and smell are the same when it gets to me, I could care less where it came from, although I'd prefer to not know if it was ground up bugs.

Hmm, I might prefer ground up bugs than lab-meat. At least bugs are naturally occuring.

They (bugs) probably don't cause cancer or anything. (I know there are naturally occuring things that cause cancer, like uranium and asbestos, but I can't think of any naturally occurring meats that cause cancer). Who knows what wierd lab-meat will do to you.

How could meat grown from chicken cells possibly cause cancer?

If it's the same as natural meat, which is what they're striving for, it will only do what natural meat does to you.

Incorrect. All seared meat contains carcinogens in the form of polyunsaturated ring systems, most notably Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) formed by the incomplete combustion of fats. As lab-grown meat will be leaner and in theory contain nothing besides what one typically finds in naturally occuring meats, the carcinogen-profile of such lab-meats may in fact be lower than that of natural meats (leaner = fewer fats stored in adipose tissue around the fat = less fat = fewer PAHs during grilling/roasting).

Just because something is natural does not mean it's not deadly or cancer-inducing. Gamma radiation is, after all, extremely natural and extremely abundant.

It's not like they're synthesizing the stuff from petroleum or anything...they grow it from meat cells, which are naturally occurring.

i would, assuming it is the same tissue as pure and healthy muscle fibers. seems a lot healthier and less disgusting than all the crap that they feed and inject into normal meat bearing animals. What grosses me out is how most of the animals industrially bred today have cancer by the time you eat them.

I guess it would be great for cows, birds and other pigs around the world. Do they make the same stuff with fish flavor ?

Assume that'd come later.

If I were making this, I'd go for beef first (costly animal to raise, material for ground beef can probably easily be made) then chicken, then pork, and finally fish.

it's not as easy as it sounds like... make your own meat??? who the hell has the money to buy a hood setup and an incubator? even labs with multiple grants cannot easily afford that.

I think the plan is to make an affordable countertop appliance that will be a "just add water and wait" type of thing down the road. In the near term, perhaps sell industrial setups to current meat producers and just put the stuff in the supply chain.

From the article:
They will also have to overcome the "ick" reaction. Many find the idea of cultured meat unappealing or downright disgusting. How would it taste?

Hmm, meat grown humanely in a sterile lab, or meat grown on a dirty live animal possibly raised in cruel conditions. Tough choice.
