Just show your friend this thread and the poll results.
The friend is me. I told him to put the poll up.
Lasagna is not expected to have meat in it but it can.

only pasta that is acceptable without meat is cheese ravioli/tortellini.
THAT IS IT
no
If it's not served with a Bolognese or Puttanesca sauce, then you probably shouldn't assume that there is meat in your sauce, served with your pasta.
The standard sauce, traditionally served over pasta, is without meat.
Of course "standard" is used a bit loosely, as it's regionally determined. Marinara (sans meat) and Bolognese (shitloads of meat) are probably the most popular, typical pasta sauces.
she has nice knockers, but I'd never go to Giada for Italian recipes.

this guy knows what's up--notice that he specifies it as "Lasgana Bolognese"
that is very important.
If good, you go to Meatland. If faced with the question "meat or no meat," the correct answer is always "meat."

You are absolutely wrong. It is true the definition of lasagna does not specify whether meat is in it (only specifies what type of pasta it must contain). However standard traditional lasagna recipes contain sausage of ground beef. If you go to a restaurant and order lasagna assuming it will be vegetarian, you will be sorely disappointed 99% of the time.
How someone could argue this is baffling.
if i were asked if i wanted lasagna, or if i were to order to lasagna, i would assume that there was meat in it and unpleasantly surprised if there weren't.
never said it was always "embedded" in the sauce ... just said it is with the pasta.

Meat is nice, but by no means an essential ingredient in lasagna.
