in my 30 years i don't think i've ever eaten lasagna WITHOUT meat in it.

The only time I've had lasagna without meat is when it stated it didn't. (I think I've had it without meat before, but have definitely seen it without it)
The assumption is that there is always meat unless stated otherwise.

If faced with the question "meat or no meat," the correct answer is always "meat."

If good, you go to Meatland.



The lasagna recipe I use calls for 1lb of various meats. I usually just use hamburger, it works well enough.

I am way more familiar with poverty than I'd like to be. Lasagne in a poor family does not contain meat - meat costs more than pasta & cheese. Non-meat lasagne is a cheap dinner. Meat lasagne is a good way to stretch that expensive meat ingredient.

My answer is that unless you're notified otherwise in some way, lasagna does not have meat.

Any time I have had lasagna it had meat in it. Not saying that it is mandatory, but I would always expect there to be meat in it unless otherwise stated.

ANother thing I imagine most of you probably don't realize--when you go to a restaurant, what you are ordering probably actually says "Lasagna al Bolognese." I understand if you don't know what that means, but it directly says "Lasagna with meat ragu."

No, it's not your fault for not understanding what it is very specifically telling you in Italian (eh, despite the fact that the description under that will invariably tell you that meat is involved), but these menus do tend to specify that meat is involved, or it is not. If it says "lasagna Marinara," then no meat.

Do you guys order "spaghetti marinara" and expect meat?

I expect a large quantity of meat in my lasagna.
Also, it's not lasagna unless it has ricotta cheese in it.

The meat can be any combination of Ground beef and/or Italian sausage.

You are absolutely wrong. It is true the definition of lasagna does not specify whether meat is in it (only specifies what type of pasta it must contain). However standard traditional lasagna recipes contain sausage of ground beef. If you go to a restaurant and order lasagna assuming it will be vegetarian, you will be sorely disappointed 99% of the time.

How someone could argue this is baffling.

Thats how we do it. In our recipe, the ground beef is browned and seasoned with spices and white wine and then layered in to the lasagna separately. The layers go something like pasta, ricotta, meat, marinara sauce (non-meat tomato sauce), mozzarella then repeat to build more layers. The tomato sauce is prepared and never touches meat until added to the lasagna dish.

Lasagna with a bolognese sauce would imply a lasagna using a tomato sauce cooked in the bolognese style; i.e with ground meat cooked into the tomato sauce from the beginning.

Lasagna is lasagna. Lasagna without meat is meatless Lasagna.

Since you don't have to put any qualifiers in front of lasagna, that infers that it comes with meat.
