Looks kinda cool.. but I'm not sure the price to play vs activity level is quite there..

Should help give it enough profile that it stay around awhile, but the balance issues they've created along with price points probably still hurt it.

I played this a lot when there was still hope it would evolve into something worthwhile. Much potential, so squandered, very sad.

Not unless they've drastically overhauled things. Anyone buying those packs is going to have to buy four more mechs and one more mech bay and do a whole lot of grinding to actually max them out.

"Q: Trial mechs suck. Why do they suck so bad?
A: Normal trial mechs (non-champions) suck because their typical thermal limit to shutdown (threshold) is 40. The average mech in MWO has a threshold of 60 to 90. This is a game design flaw in the eyes of some, and "amazing" in the eyes of others. Whatever the case, as typical for a free to play game you start with something awful (when it doesn't have to be were the game designed just a little differently) and you're in for a rough ride.

I recommend going through each of your weapon groups with the left/right arrow keys and hitting backspace on all of them. This sets chain fire. You'll shutdown a lot less with that enabled. Good luck, you're gonna need it. Also, being a rear-guard isn't such a bad idea. Give it a shot."

I gave up on it long ago when they created more and more balance problems for themselves as they continued to move further and further away from Battletech/Mechwarrior equipment stats. While they had reasons to do what they did, almost everything could have been fixed by adding weapon "shake" (i.e. hit probability, based on combination of factors such as movement speed, terrain footing, heat, and/or jumping). I also understand wanting to make matches last long and agreed that the doubling of armor points made some sense, but in doing so, ammo based weapons should have had their ammo per ton increased to compensate for the loss of deadly damage.

These simple changes would have made balance so much easier, but they decided to not listen to the people in beta test, and went their own way for trying to balance things, which simply lead to one unbalanced setup after the next with people simply changing what they did based on what the new "balance" rules created.

Awful game. I paid $60+ for it years ago, and it just kept getting worse and worse. Tried it again half a year ago and it was just as bad plus even more P2W than before.

This was one of two games that really opened my eyes to the scam potential of kickstarter and early access games.

I used to play Battletech the crescent hawks inception on the Amiga. I loved the game, spent hours on it with over modded battlemechs.

They went, they screwed up what was a very solid Battletech game rather early on in beta and they defaced the Mechwarrior name.

If you can see the game for what it is and ignore what it did to Battletech lore then all the power to you, enjoy it... but it has went so far beyond ludicrous that I cannot even contemplate downloading it even if it'd be a good test for my GPU.

last estimate i could find on player numbers was some back of the napkins stuff on reddit. something like 9k total daily and 1-2k concurrent peak.

so 3k additional concurrent players from steam is probably progress.

jingles is coming out with a review soon, apparently he turned down some serious money from PGI to review it with no conditions, because he didnt want to bash the game and take the money.

Holy DLC $147 for all the packs

and the link to the store is only one page.

$210 USD for the top clan mech.

though a quick look does not turn up the cockpit bling they started selling a year or two back. or the "Premium Time" upgrades or extra storage cost for the mechs (garages).

and do not forget about buying in game money to help with repairs or items that add "cred" or honor points to your chosen group/clan/government force.

and if you are lucky, you get access to the free and heavily over moderated forums too

I paid about $200 bucks to be a founder when the thing came out originally and was last time I pre ordered anything myself. If it was the same one from a couple years ago, I imagine it is.

It was a resounding thud even then and I never played it after launch.

I've played off and on since closed Beta. It is a glorified team deathmatch for the most part. The high level competitive scene can be fun because it is truly awesome what an organized 12 man on Teamspeak can do...

But, a lot of the criticisms leveled here are pretty much spot on.

The only one that isn't true is the "Pay 2 Win". I would call it "Pay 2 Not Grind (As Much)". All of the top tier competitive mechs and weapon loadouts can be obtained with c-bills earned in game.

Can they really? The last time I played the hero Firestarter, Victor, and Stalker made up a good portion of the meta. Yeah, that was before the clans, but I'm hard pressed to believe that no top tier mechs are still behind a paywall now.

I would not pay $200 for a video game if Helen Mirren's boobs were the controller.

Wait - I need to change my answer . . .

This was the hugest fight early on the forums. All the MW4 kids wanted pinpoint accuracy "because otherwise its a laser shotgun!" and ignored all the balance problems it historically brought to the game. If they had went with a cone of fire like every other FPS it probably would have turned out to be a very different game and could have stuck way closer to the lore.
