I'm starting to look out for a used combatstick, as an option, and maybe a Thrustmater T.Flight HOTAS X (the one you got, maybe?). A Sidewinder adapter will cost around $30, a bit less if I take the time to adapt it to perfboard (however, I never use my big breadboard, so it won't be a real loss).
The sim jockeys on the mwomercs.com forums also seem to like the Saitek x52 and x65.
Saitek's centering spring secured to the floating plastic ring is a love or hate thing, and I'm way on the end of the hate side. I have a couple I've been meaning to sell for cheap (my cat loves the Evo's box, so I may have to keep it ). The feel is just wrong. The x65 is a whole different beast, in a real sim price range, and I've read that the x52 Pro feels better wrt to centering than the 'plain' x52.
I ended up with a relatively inexpensive Thrustmaster HOTAS. It's as good as I remember my USB Sidewinder being so many years ago. (No idea how it compares to the Precision Pro, of course.)
AFAIK, all of them starting with the 3D Pro (the symmetrical non-ergonomic model) are gradual updates, internally, and more or less act the same, and all USB models are newer than mine. The only real problems came with force feedback models that got heavy use, and that the throttles would wear out, if you used them (since you need two hands, I never understood the point, compared to a second controller, or using the keyboard, and always considered it a cheap way for them to add an axis for marketing reasons).
