victor is about it that i can think of in oldschool.

thats it and it got its ass handed to it in that config. Throw an awesome in the ring and boom done. Death from above is good for small mechs to do larger amounts of damage and also to increase headshot chances.

Battletech led to the Mechwarrior series. Both were tabletop RPG's back in the day.. yes I played them and yes I am a bit older. Mechwarrior 3 was , IMO, the best of the game series. As MW4 changed the Mech configurations to a set layout it took away from the actual configurations of Mechs, whatever you wanted it to do. But as I said I am the old school player so maybe I am set in my ways. LOL

Hopefully it does hit MMO and run rampant as its earlier counterparts did.

Giving away Mech 4 for free is a good idea. At this point they've about made as much money as they'll ever make from selling it and by giving it away they promote renewed interest in the game and perhaps introduce it to new players prior to the launch of the new game. I wish other gaming companies would think this way.

Can someone explain what was wrong wrong with mechwarrior 4? I came late to the mech universe so M4 Mercs is the only game I've playe an I really enjoyed it. stack as many clann gauss + autocannons with missiles filling out the rest of the space on a mech as possible FTW.

Atlas does jump when you mod it.
And yea it does take up quite a few tons to get the lift you need for that beast and for a very short distance, when playing with death from above modified rules (i.e. I think we tweaked our own) it was quite the treat.

It's been so long maybe I'm confusing the tactic with a lighter mech, who knows.

I don't think I ever used a traditional mech layout, always went custom configs. I'm referring to the tabletop game.

MW4 was a bit subpar to begin with, just not done all that well imho. Now MW4: Mercs was truly awesome with real choices you can make that effect the outcome of the game and a few others things as well as the black market system.

The things I imagine people hate about it would be the limited weapon slot choices (which I liked), cartoonish graphics, the missions not being as well scripted like mech hiding in valleys shut down until you get too close (stealth) and a apparent departure from book/board game lore though I don't know what exactly.

Now this upcoming game looks like they are going about it in the right way by using a tried and tested graphics engine that will work on both PC and 360 leaving them to focus more on gameplay (I hope). My biggest fear is we'll get gimped on the PC with the controls because the 360 controller doesn't have enough buttons (those who bought a hard copy of MW3 know what I mean with the printed keyboard layout).

so this is not to be confused with the rumored UT3-based mech game?

I thought this was UT3 based? Could be misremembering.

it is. seems the unofficial game i remembered has become official.

my bad, i was thinking of mechwarrior: living legends, a crysis mod. i wonder what will happen to that project now that FASA exists again and is cranking out a mech game.

Some comments from the MWLL team

I am very interested in both actually.

Also reminds me, anyone got a idea of what type of DRM this game is likely to have? I'd really hate to have to boycott it.

This is just one of those games where I have to put aside my feelings on DRM and just buy it!

Hehe, Defender on the MWLL forums posted this in regards to response to news of a MW "Reboot":

"Also, this new MW game has a 50/50 chance of either being Epic, or Garbage, so wouldn't it be more amusing if our mod ended up being much better than an official game from an official company led by a creator of Battletech? I'd have that shit written on my tombstone."

I don't understand why some people are hating. I logged in especially to make a post about Mech Warrior. Do you realize that the new Mech is going to be incredibly good...

I'm not sure where you're going with this. All we have is a 3 minute teaser and some developer promises (not many, either, mind you). How can you say that this is going to be incredibly good? I'm not claiming that it will be bad, either. There's just no way to tell at this point.

There are a few videos out of it already. It's still in early-mid developement but just by the gameplay already it looks fantastic. You can't mess up MechWarrior- it's legendary. It's possible, but I have a strong feeling that MechWarrior is going to be great.

@Oakenfold: I assume you have not played Mech Assault.

Everything is here for the making of a epic game, and history has shown that can mean very little.

I did a little work for mwll they should really calm the rhetoric a bit. They wouldn't survive someone enforcing their copy write.

Here is my logical fear. MW was one of the most complex games I played on my PC. It was very close to a simulator. Every key on the keyboard did something. Because of this, it tended to make you feel like you were actually sitting in a mech that you needed to learn how to pilot. How do you put something like that on the Xbox 360? Dumb the controls down? Automate lots of things? If they go that route they fuck over a major aspect of the game in my opinion. I know, most will still eat that shit up, but it won't be the same experience.

To me, MW was always kind of like Microsoft Flight Simulator, except sitting in a mech and going to war. You have to recreate that experience and stay away from the arcadey action shit where it plays just like an FPS in a big robot body (Shogo).

Lets hope that get a little greedy and smart, and put out a custom controller/joy stick for this game. It's been done before.

What was the name of the MMO for battletech? Remember it being run from Genie I think way back when and then later it was a separate service in eternal "beta" before they cancelled it. Was basically a map of the IS where how many battles a side one would change planet control, similar to the boneyard and TA. Graphically combat was basic as it used one of the first battletech games as a basic which was nothing much more than big blocky mechs and limited terrain.

Pretty much my same feelings.

They could do complex controls even with an xbox controller. It has plenty of buttons to do alot of stuff but I can't imagine that having much popularity on xbox. They could also have an arcade vs sim mode or a series of options like IL2 to change what you have to control. If they build a sim and add options to automate stuff it'll likely be decent. If they build an arcade game and try to add sim like options it'll likely suck.

Of course at this point any PC mech game is a welcome sight

MPBT: Solaris was played for a long time, you're talking about its replacement, MPBT:3025. See my post in "What's your favorite mech".

Holy shit, I forgot about that game. What was it called again? Time to pick it up on the cheap on craigslist.
