wow, that is quite a gratuitous assumption coming from someone who does not even know you dont have to power down Linux to update.

Says the man who's now assuming I don't know how Linux works? I've currently got active VM's running Ubuntu, CentOS, and SUSE at the house. I've also got two Solaris VM's, two Android VM's, and an OSX VM. I've got additional CentOS, SUSE, and RHEL boxes at work.

Maybe you should leave this conversation to the big boys and stop embarrassing yourself. You do a good enough job of that in the CPU section.

Wow, and I thought me with my windows VM, all the way from windows 98 to windows 10 qualifies me as a windows pro. You gotta be kidding me. How many hours do you spend inside your VM per day?

I used my virtualbox on my Linux machine to run windows and windows software constantly when WINE can’t do the job.

Yeah, I am totally embarrassing myself despite the fact I am majoring in computer engineering and had been thoroughly drilled in the technical side of both software and hardware.

And I thought you ran Linux in your laptop instead of VM, why the sudden change in your story for credibility? And let me see how you schedule a shutdown for update in xubuntu Linux pls.

Perhaps you should go back and re-read this thread and realize you're getting posters mixed up rather than continuing to plow forward with your stupidity.

And please let me know where you majored in computer engineering so I can tell them they failed.

I retracked the last paragraphs after realizing I am speaking to a different clueless poster.

So far, you haven’t yet tell me why windows Linux is worse off than windows as a server except ad hominem attacks.

Sure, go ahead, take it up to the CS deperatment and tell all the tenured PhDs there how they are failing as an educator.

If you go back and read it again or however many times it takes to absorb what's being said, you'd realize that none of the seasoned SysAdmins you're arguing with (which includes me) has said there's anything wrong with Linux. We're simply pointing out that every single argument you're making is at best completely moot or at worst completely wrong. Which anybody with any actual experience could tell you. You've made it abundantly clear you have zero experience running servers.

A) Windows Servers don't need regular reboots. Yes they generally need a reboot when you update them. But it's up to you to determine how often you need to do that. I've got multiple 2012R2 and 2016 boxes that only reboot a couple of times a year.
B) Regardless what OS you're running any SysAdmin knows that if you need 24x7x365 uptime, you have redundancies. No OS is immune to issues nor is hardware infallible. I've got a variety of Linux and FreeBSD devices that have to be rebooted due to issues.
C) Linux has a learning curve and OP stated that he's not terribly familiar with it. Plex has made their Linux installation pretty straight forward but it's still marginally more difficult than Windows. If he wants to learn, great, more power to him. But if he doesn't, he's not gaining much going to Linux either.
D) If you're getting a server infected with a virus/malware/etc, regardless of OS, you've failed at life.
E) Arguing you can't find time to reboot a home media server is just silly.

I'll tell you what. Since you you seem to feel your (in progress?) college education makes you an expert on the subject, how many servers do you current administrate? Regardless of OS. Right now, I'm around 7,500. That's probably going to double over the next year as we add another DC.

Edit: I'd also be perfectly happy to explain to your PhD's the difference between theory and practice, but any PhD should already know that. So the problem probably isn't on their side.

Last 15 years and you never have an issue with malware randomly reconfiguring your browser to serve you ads? Lol, I highly doubt it. This tells me you had been hacked without ever realizing it.

We're talking about servers and no, I have never had that. I've never had that with my workstations either but that's because I have multiple lines of defense, including in-line malware and virus scanning on ALL traffic. This tells me you don't know how a network defense perimeter works.

And windows is not the biggest player in the server market so I wouldn’t be using that argument if I were you. Android running on the Linux kernel had already overtaken windows as the most popular OS while google chrome OS(a derivative of a Linux desktop distro) already is storming the low end market.

You keep moving the goal posts here. If you're discussing viruses, you're discussing clients as viruses on Windows servers happen only under the most incompetent administrators. If we're discussing clients, Linux has a laughably small footprint.

Also, if you think hackers have no incentive to break into enterprise Linux system, you are wrong. I am just glad Linux for desktops is way more secure than windows can ever be.

Are we now talking about hacking or are we talking about viruses? I can't keep track since you keep changing the subject. You DO know hackers are not the same as viruses, right?

You still are not refuting my points that windows has a weakness of needing to reboot. Doesn’t matter if you a sysadmin or not, doesn’t matter if you cite an top level authority who manages the computers of an entire country who likes to uses windows server. Inherent weakness is weakness and op specifically asked if he should used Linux instead of windows cuz of certain issues he stated and I gave him a reason why. Linux devicees are more stable btw. Never once have I seen something resembling a BSOD.

My education has nothing to do with server but I am quite familiar with both OSes. And you don’t ever dismiss a valid argument of someone just because he has not been in the industry. This is pure fallacy and arrogance.

Listen, there is a point in time in which you have installed malware. Doesn’t matter if you have AV or not, you had installed malware on windows at least ONCE. Let me repeat, YOU HAD INSTALLED MALWARE.

I know how networking works but I wasn’t talking about some kid hacking your LAN ain’t I?

I wasn’t talking about consumer Linux desktops(although I would argue it is also superior OS to windows in that regard). I was talking about Linux as home media streaming server and as enterprise servers.

By the context, I meant hacker as someone who uses malware obviously. Can’t you figure out the connotations?

The ability to not reboot for an update is a nice feature to have. I enjoyed it even as a regular home users who does not need to run a machine 24/7. For servers that need to serve clients 24/7, maintenance time is best keep to a minimum.

The OP hasn't responded in this thread since Dec 14th.
I can't blame them because this thread has totally derailed
at this point into snide comments and misinformation.

Locking this.
