I'd like to get something that doesn't look cheap or crappy to store my BR collection in. Anyone done any shopping in this area recently that may have some links?

Can you give an example of what "looks cheap or crappy"? Also what is your budget and capacity requirement. I store everything on the server itself, its in a full size tower case, 7 HDDs and 3 SSDs later, I still have room for more HDDs but ran out of ports.

A furniture type item for the physical media, not digital.

Look for media storage cabinet, they are a bit bigger, not sure if you need that big, but they look good imo.

Rip them to a server and store them in a cardboard box in the garage.

did that with my CD's and it's worked out really well.

didn't bother with my DVD's/blurays just because I don't own enough to justify... I just keep my small DVD collection on a shelf amongst a wall of bookcases in the living room.

Makemkv makes it really easy. It is more a time sink, but if you do it right you do it once for forever.

it's tedious, but it's not "hard."

(of course, there are also illegal shortcuts that could aid your endeavor, not that I'd endorse that... :ninja

I've got about 390 blu ray rips on my NAS. I had the good fortune to get into backing up my media near when I started collecting Blu-rays though, so it wasn't too bad. Still, if I were to lose all my backups today, I'd get to work ripping them all over again. It really is that much better. My entire movie collection is immediately available throughout my house and on all my mobile devices over the internet. I ain't ever giving that up.

Yep this. I love it, too. I still actually keep my media out because it makes it easier for some people to quickly look through; but really I love being able just to browse through with Kodi.

i essentially use shallow profile bookshelfs, kinda similar to this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/atlantic...&skuId=9735365
I have these shelves along about 10 feet of the side wall of my theater room. Holds all my cds, dvds, blurays ... though its very crowded so Ill probably move the cds to binders eventually and get rid of the jewel cases.. As I have ripped pretty much all of the CDs or downloaded mp3 rips from stuff like amazons autorip service... i think i have like 800 or 900 cds, so I could free up pretty much space by just taking older ones I bought in the 90s and putting them in "storage".

Don't really want something that is totally open as it will be in a room that otherwise is just a kids play area.

I read many a BR rip thread when I was looking into it before. A lot of complaints and talk about different expensive software suites to supposedly make it easier. Lately I've seen talk about knowing some chapter order sequence crap too.

And then play them back on your TV with a properly configured Raspberry Pi 2 or a Chromebox.

Welcome to 2015 OP.

This.

This is where I store all my movies... and everything else:

:awe:

Only the 24 bay chassis has actual data on it. It's only a paltry 19TB but has tons of room for expansion as I need it.

On serious note, if you go with any kind of cabinet, use something closed, so it does not turn into a dust trap, and it just looks cleaner than seeing a shelf with a bunch of cases on it. Easiest route is probably something custom built with shelves that are the perfect height and depth for CD cases.

People are still using TV's?

Ripping isn't that hard these days. Some mild software even automates it so all you do is put the disk in and it spits it out when it's done. Add a notifier to the eject action and it's not even that much of a time sink.
