'Something i've been meaning to ask lately is where have the Tayo Yudens gone? I was in CompUSA and Best Buy both the other day and neither have any marked 'made in Japan'. I knew about FujiFilm's well known departure from using TY but it looks like Sony has, too! What is up? Surely TY still makes them. Where can one find them now?

For those interested in Taiyo Yuden discs, another thread mentions Rite-Aid selling FujiFilm this week for $9.99, with no rebates. At least one user reports receiving Taiyo Yuden, which is certainly possible at many locations as their stock is not as frequently rotated as the more popular electronics stores.

I appreciate it if you all can share the media manufacturer/mediaID and also the stores where you bought your dvd media. This way we can avoid getting bad medias. I think it is particular stores which sell fake OEMs of major manufacturer.

Following is my data:

Store, MediaType , Manufacturer , MediaID.
Target , 2x DVD-R/4x DVD+R , TDK (Movie Box, 5PK) , CMC.
Circuit City, 2.4X DVD-RW/4X DVD+RW, TDK (Jewel Cases, 5PK) , RICOHJPNW11.
Costco , 2X DVD-R , TDK (Spindle, 15PK) , CMC.

Does anyone know? It's like a "smoked silver" finish. It's perfect for using a sharpie on.

I have some OfficeMax generics ( brand? ) that have a surface like that.
They are Ritek 700m, with an ID of 97m15s17f and have a small emboss
mark near the inner rim that says "Ritek". This mark can be seen as you
look into the top of the spindle while the cover is closed, so it would be easy
to pick out in a store, and these CDs work great.

if you buy 'plain' yuden's, the ones they sell that don't mention inkjetprintable or whatever, it will not be a frosted finish in my experience like the Fujis. It's more shiny, and no words on it at all...

but shows up clearly as yuden's on Nero's cd info report tool..

and burns at 52x... unlike these Prodisc Fuji's I got that burn at 48x Nero auto calibrates...

And you can write on it fine.. i'm using a CD marker, not a sharpie though...

are sharpies safe for writing on cds?

on the other side of the coin, i don't know if these plain yuden's recommend one to write on them, regardless of cd-safe marker or not...?

Thanks, that saved me a ton of $$$ in gas!! There is a Staples half a mile from my house, and the nearest Best Buy is 28 miles. They did a price match and total after tax was $23.84.
