I never take no for an answer. I start to get louder and firmer in my tone until he feels personally threatened. Of course, I'm a pro at getting what I want in stores when possible. Depending on your state's consumer-protection laws, that might have been outright illegal for him to refuse a return, on a defective item. Might want to check that out.
