Ok..this deal is a bit strange, but I think it's extremely HOT for uninsured NYC residents. You can apply for Disaster Medicaid and thus get coverage for check ups, dental appointments, prescription drugs, eye checkups, and any other kind of coverage that regular medicaid gets.

It's only good for 4 months, but it's enough for me since I'm a student without insurance.

Please note that Jan 31st is the last day to sign up for it...2 more days left!!! You have to have a Soc security number and bring a valid photo ID. For more details check Disaster Relief Medicaid

You have to go to one of these medicaid offices to apply. The lines are getting long. Ironically the 34th St. manhattan office wasn't that bad. The line was long but quick.

I know this is more of public service announcement, so please no flames. If it's not appropriate, then I'll delete this post.

I did this a couple of days ago. They provide medicaid for anybody with a Social Security and photo ID(just like FrugalGuy mentioned). Mine expires on April 30th, and they offer full coverage. I think this is a good deal for those with no health coverage. Since, I'm not working full time right now, this is excellent for me, because I don't have coverage any more.

Beware though, I went to sign up at Elmhurst Hospital and the place was packed. I got there at 7:30am and I was number 270. I got out at about 2:00pm. I believe there was about 600 people there that day. They had to send some people in different locations to help everyone.

Awesome. Too bad I don't have the time to go and sign up, because I need some dental work done.

Rivergater,

I called the medicaid office, YOU CANNOT GO TO 34TH STREET. IT'S FOR REFERRAL CASES ONLY. You have to visit one of the medicaid offices first then they probably send you to the 34th branch office...yep..it sucks..but that's how they work..

The 34th st. location isn't listed (not sure why), but you can still go there even if you haven't been referred there. My friend just went there today and he got it.

The address is 340A west 34th St. between 8th and 9th ave. Take the A, C, or E trains.

Frugal Guy rocks! Although I was initially turned away at 34th st (sent away for a referral), the entire thing took about three hours, and I have insurance again.

Boy, this unemployed thing just sucks...

<< I guess one could consider that welfare is a hot deal.

I happen to work and pay taxes.
>>

i'm sure a lot of people in New York work and pay taxes too, they just don't have enough to make ends meet. You think everyone in New York can make the average $42k an adult white male makes in this country? There aren't enough high paying jobs to go around. In our current system a large percentage of the people have to work at low end jobs, not to mention our recession or that this work usually the most physically grueling, maybe your right - only people who work and pay taxes should be entitled to go find their own provider. Then again maybe by being citizens in the most affluent country in the world we have the right to health care
