Spectrum IS VOIP. It uses the regular phone jacks that are in the house, and regular phones, including those with answering machines. No need for a computer or cell to check messages.
Then you don't call it a landline...

It's VOIP, through cable. Cell phones make no sense for HOME use to me. And at $15 a month, just a wee bit cheaper than a cell plan. And I can call anyone I want, no "long distance" charges at all. Why would they have to be close?

Using a mobile at home makes no sense to me either. For me, having a landline is _way_ cheaper, and infinitely more reliable. But everyone is in a different situation. I think for many only having a mobile works out easier, and maybe can even be cheaper.

What I really hate is how many internet accounts and things now demand to be linked to a mobile number, for 2FA and such-like. I have a PAYG mobile for purely that purpose, but the last one got cancelled by the provider because I almost never used it, so I lost access to that number forever, which led to me being permanently locked out of at least one on-line web account (that kept demanding I verify via the phone number I no longer have).

I'm not a cell phone addict, had one from 1993 to 2006, I have no need for one now. My wife has one if I need it when traveling, and SHE insists we keep the landline. The answering machine is built into the phone base, takes no space. I have 4 phones in the house and garage too!

If I had a cell too, I'm sure it would just double the calls.

Enjoy staring into your little screen 24 hours a day.
Spectrum voice mail is better, and will email you with a transcript if they leave a message.

With Spectrum and nomorobo, about 3 - 4 calls a week get through, sometimes less.

Until the last couple weeks, I only got about 1-2 a month. As far as using spectrum voicemail, I don't want emails for messages.

With a reguar answering machine, I can call home from anywhere to check for messages with a code. No computer is ever needed to access it. I prefer it that way.

16 calls so far today. They start at 6 or 7a.m., and the last I got today was at 11:00p.m.

This is on a Spectrum land line, so we have to turn the ringers off when we go to bed. And since the ansering machine plays my message at full volume, no matter where you set it, we have to turn that off as well.

It's ridiculous.
My Panasonic cordless land line system has 3 phones, a home base and 2 satellite charging stations. It incorporates answering system. Each phone's ringer volume can be set, including silent. Each phone has LCD screen to show either caller or caller's number. If volume is on, I hear automated voice announcing who the caller is, if known, or where the caller is, if known. I can pick up or not, my choice. If volume is zero, if caller leaves message, each phone flashes on/off to indicate I have message(s). The system supports blocking callers, which have to be set up at the time of the call (up to 250). If a call's coming in and I'm sure I never want to hear from them again I block the number by pressing a couple buttons. It doesn't solve anything for callers that spoof a different number each time they call, but most all spammers' systems give up eventually is my experience. I never hear my outgoing message on my system unless I check to hear what it is. Don't know why you have that going on.

I don't check calls on my cell phone unless I'm traveling, basically. Most of the time I set it Mute so I won't be annoyed.

They spoof their number. I get scam calls about the Chinese consulate having my package. I am Taiwanese

I get a lot of those.

I barely understand Mandarin and not literate in Chinese.

So Chinese consulate calls, missing package calls in Chinese, and any text in Chinese are automatically spam for me.

I've trained my parents to never respond back to unknown calls and texts, and to ask myself or one of my brother's to double check the call for them.

@WilliamM2 Modern cell phones can be set it so that only people in your contacts will be able to reach you. Everything else goes to voicemail. And don't trust the caller ID data, it is very easily spoofed.

Effective scammers used the method of pretending to be Chinese law enforcement spinning a narrative that the possible victim was involved in some crime abroad and the individual would be implicated. They were successful in suckering my mother to hand out her social security number to them.

It's a bit of endemic cultural behavior to surrender in the face of authority and "keep skeletons buried" that makes the scam work. With the CCP in the past flexing its powers, it makes the potential victim exceptionally open to coughing up information.

I have the same phones, 5 in total. They can be programmed to not ring on the first ring, which allows nomorobo to screen the call and disconnect before the phone actually rings. That first ring, muted, is enough to capture the callerID, so you can see how many things nomorobo blocks.

Hadn't heard of nomorobo. Just did a quick search. The version for landline is still free. I have no idea how it works or how to use it but I'm gonna try and find out... thanks!

It's simple If I get a call and the number isn't in my contacts let it ring. If they leave a message I will check. If not the number gets blocked.

Blocking spoofed numbers does nothing. And the ringing is the problem, I don't want to listen to it, especially at 6:00 a.m.

Turn off ringer. If you want it on later, turn back on.
As stated before, that's what we have to do now, and turn off the answering machine becuase it still plays my message. Not ideal at all.

On the positive side, I only got 3 calls yesterday, and 2 so far today. Hopefully it's ending. It should end by Dec. 7th when open enrollmnet is over for the seniors.

Pixel phones have a feature to screen unknown calls. Answers and says it is screen this call, state the reason for the call. If they actually do, it will show me the text of their response, and allow me to answer. For 90%+ of the calls, I only discover that I got a spam call by reviewing recent calls history.

I think my S9 is limited to Android 10. I suppose there's anti-spam stuff available. Fact is I don't check my cell for calls, lately occasionally for texts. It's my landline where I get calls sent to that matter to me.
