Medication In Jail

I've read about a handful of cases where people needed expensive treatments that they couldn't afford so they committed crimes that would get them a short amount of time in jail.

I heard a story about a guy who was employed but didn't have health insurance (I think he was a can driver) and needed heart surgery. He did a bit of research to see what the most minor crime that he could be arrested for was. He goes to a gas station, fills up without paying, drives a couple minutes and waits for the cops to arrest him. He's booked and would've been released without bail but during the booking process he says he fells chest pain. He's taken to the hospital, the confirm his heart issue and he gets bypass surgery on the taxpayer's dime. Probably a bullshit story (wait, something I heard on the internet is untrue!) but you never know.

Just to be clear, even if the OP's story is true his friend would NOT end up in state prison for quite a while. If he's arrested he'll wait in the local county jail for quite a bit of time while awaiting trial, assuming he isn't released on bail. It's not like you commit a crime and go instantly to prison (prison and jail are NOT the same thing) so it sounds like he'd have to commit a serious enough crime that he wouldn't be released on his own recognizance or on minimal bail.

Unless he pirates, then it will be straight to jail with no parole or trial. He just needs to get on pirate bay and start downloading everything like a mad man.

Can you be forced to take bail? If you had enough money in your pocket when arrested to cover bail, can they make you use it, or can you opt to stay in jail until trial?

Not always. If he goes into prison with it they might not treat it. Usually you have to already be in prison when something like this comes up for them to pay for it.

Not sure about bail, but if he's released on his own recognizance I'm pretty sure he can't choose to stay in jail!

This is exactly his mindset. He doesn't believe everyone is out to rape him and that everyone has AIDS. He is looking into a minimum security prison and working with an attorney (did I say attorney?) to find a minimum security punishment for something.

My company runs background checks on people all the time. Things like "has cancer" don't show up. There's a reason medical practices are held to such high privacy standards. And even if such info did get out, 3rd parties would also be breaking the law by selling such info.

By the time they clear him to get the medication he'll be dead.

It took them 2 weeks to clear my prescriptions when I was in jail.
Wish they would have cleared it when I got in, especially the one that helped me sleep. I had maybe hour or 2 of sleep a day for first week until I got used to all the noise.

No, it doesn't show up. Go ahead and buy a full background report on her. If it has medical info on it, sue the company that sold you the report.

Maybe its the employers talking amongst themselves when verifying previous employment. Or maybe there was a waiver check box on the application or during the interview. I'm not sure how they went about it, but they did. It was implied by the some of employees who encouraged her to interview at some of the companies.

Well then they screwed up, and people have sued based on as little to go on as that.

Yeah, but its hard to prove. Just one of those things that you know. Or believe you know is true. I would put my money on a company trying to save a few bucks vs doing the right thing.
