A friend of mine is on an expensive cancer drug for him to stay alive. He has no insurance and is running out of money quick. He was wondering what happens if he was arrested and/or sent to prison? Would they be required to supply him with this drug to keep him alive?

Why should the taxpayers be required to pay for his expensive cancer drugs in prison?

Unfortunately, in MANY states, he'd still get his treatment and meds while in prison.

He could simply get the minimal so it won't be a good thing but then again he could might not have to worry about it for long in prison once he gets the prison surprise.

Yes they will... but he has to be ready to face the possible harsh environments of prison = which may be worst than death or cancer. This is one of the reasons that the California Jail/Prison system is over crowded.

Probably better off seeking an other alternative, like a job that has a better drug plan. Prison is only going to add further complications such as aids.

Can he get credit cards, max them out then declare bankruptcy? Thats the American way.

Yes he would get the medical treatments while in jail at the tax payers expense. There have been many stories where some guy just goes and robs a bank and then gives themselves up so they can get food/shelter/medical care in jail.

I think that's the point... He can't afford his meds, and is going to do something to put himself in prison until the cancer treatment is over.

Didn't someone with a liver disease do this, just so he did not have to foot the 80k bill...and just did a petty crime, took jail time, got checked out, surgeory, etc, then got out...

out of curiosity, what is the medication called? And how much does it cost per month?

I doubt he will get it.

They only have to provide minimal cover and he will get the cheapest medicine required and even then it could be delayed for a few months before he gets it or even gets a check up.

umm, thanks for answering a different question, I guess?

But I imagine it varies wildly from state to state.

Why stop there? Have his family setup to sue the prison for failing to provide him proper health care once he is in prison!

I remember saying that was my backup plan in life. Freeze to death in Canadian winter or get free cable TV in Canadian jail? I'll take the free TV and free food and stuff.

I don't know the name of the meds he needs. He is about 40 years old and recently divorced (because of the medical problems). He just wants to live. Even in prison with AID's, its still living. His cancer without meds, doctors say about 3 or 4 months. With meds, many years. He wants to see his children growing up and grand children. A prison appears to be his only answer.

I'd exhaust all other options first (new job with better benefits, cancer charities, charging it on credit cards and then declaring bankruptcy, Medicaid etc.) before resorting to that.

Is his cancer the type that normally goes into remission? Because if he went to jail, got the (cheapest) treatment, and then got out on good behavior just as the cancer flared up again, that would defeat the purpose.

Sometimes you become unhireable when you have a pre-existing medical condition. Employers don't want to pay the increase in premiums.

Prison route sounds perfect for him.
I'd rather live in jail than die a painful death in freedom.

And I'm sure jail isn't as bad as people make it sound.
