I finally decided to buy the expansion to tide me over until ETW comes out. I've been playing Medieval 2 forever on vanilla.

I started out playing the Teutonic Knights... And there's one insanely irritating thing i've notice in the first hour.

Whenever i charge cavalry with my own (especially my generals) and the enemy cavalry starts to run away (not rout) they always end up smacking the crap out of my guys on the way out. They're not attacking.. just plain running away. But for some reason any of my cavalry that happen to be standing in their path are instantly killed.

Its quite annoying, because my generals end up taking ridiculous losses after they already kick the crap out of the unit and they start to run... but anything in their path while running away is instantly killed..

I'm assuming this is a bug introduced in the expansion, as i've never ever seen this happen in the original game.

Has anyone else seen this problem? I've got Kingdoms updated to 1.5

Haven't seen that one bug, but I have noticed that enemy armies attacking my fortified cities will flee to the edge of the map and wait until the clock runs out. Since I usually play with the battle limit off, this can be really annoying. Double so when the city only has a garrison of archers and spear militia.

Nah, that's been always there ever since the first games in the total war series. Many units get a charge bonus which is substantial. Routing units are considered to be charging. Thus, always chase down routers from behind lest you lose your general to some routers.

I think what happened was the enemy was running in a straight line so they got the charge bonus and since you were chasing him your troops got a bit out of formation and didn't get the bonus. Charge in Medieval 2 was pretty difficult to control compare to the previous games. You had to make sure your troops are tightly packed and kept that formation during the charge with the lances down so thats really difficult to do if your target is moving away or to the side. It was a realism thing introducted in Medieval 2.

And thats the buggy side effect lol. Enemy running straight away so they got the charge bonus and troops chasing were out of formation so they dont' get the bonus.

Yeah, i see what youre all saying. I've had that happen before to infantry

But i just found it odd.. since my cavalry will get trampled as the enemy cavalry is disengaging. So, they have no room to build a charge, and they do not have their lances out. They have simpled turned their backs and are trying to get out of the tangle of my own cavalry. Yet anything in their way gets a smack down.

Only reason i was confused is for this here:

Ex. My cavalry charges infantry, crushes down a few lines, and then i double click then away so they dont get caught in combat and i can make another charge. Yet, there's always a few units that end up dieing by getting smacked in the back by the infantry trying to get away or untangled.

Yet when the situation is reversed.. their cavalry will demolish anything while trieing to get away.. even my general units.

Am i making any sense?

That explains why I suddenly lose half my heavy cavalry against extremely weak units occasionally. Oh, and I really should stop using my cavalry in cities after knowing this.
