Playing as the English and I suck. Decided I felt like playing the game again (seems to happen every once in a while).

Any tips for the game in general? Also, if you want to share anything about the English campaign please do.

Thank ye!

Make alliances and trades with the Scottish and the French from the start (I think you'll be at war against the French at the beginning, so if you want to trade with them which is highly recommended before a real war starts then try to convince them by sending your Princess for Diplomatic negotiations, but do not send her to marry a French Prince/King, that'd ruin everything because your Princess has the best charisma out of all of your starting regular Diplomats so keep her outside of any marriage), in fact you should train one or two extra Diplomats excluding the one you have when you begin, and send them all across the map and do the same with every Christian factions. If you make alliances with Islamic factions the Pope won't like it very much and other Christian factions will soon regard you as a potential threat. As soon as the Pope orders a Crusade, obey. As required train a half-full flag of troops and enter the Crusade, but you don't have to actually go and attack the target of the Crusade. Just entering it will suffice.

Anyways... where was I....

Ah yes, so trading, very important. Also at the start don't train any other troops, keep what you have, and instead build Farms (Land Clearance) in all cities/villages. Then make Grain Exchanges (lowest levels of a "market"), which are required if you are to trade with other factions. Then only once your Farms and Grain Exchanges are done you can consider training more troops (since your Farms will help with the food production and you won't eat everything for your troops leaving your regular populace starving to death). Basically you need to manage your resources first instead of your military.

If you play the vanilla game (without mods, but still patched that is) then I think that the first nation that will attack you will be the French, or the Scottish, but I think it'll be the French, so as soon as you notice that they (French or Scottish) have sent a Spy in any of your settlements then you know what it means, they are preparing to attack, but that doesn't mean they will do it the next turn, but stay vigilant, just position your troops closer to your settlements to discourage any assaulting attempts even by the Rebels. Another thing to consider keeping an eye for is the overall happiness of your population. To keep them happy at the start without costing too much you'll need to build Churches. Also train Priests and position one inside each of your controlled provinces (outside of the settlements) to keep the Christianity healthy and the Heretics away.

Hope it helps.

I disagree somewhat. I found it easy right off the get go to vanquish the Scots and Irish. I did that within the first five turns. The rest of your advice is sound.

Blitz your way through.

If you want to have fun though... I would capture 20 or so settlements and then build up from there (turtle tactic). This will also let the AI build up (which is good because you wont have to build up once you capture their settlements)...the fun part about this turtle tactic is that you get to have massive battles with balanced armies and advanced units.

But the blitz way is fun too.

1. Sacking settlements pays off huge, but gets you into worst standings with the pope

2. Keep your army upkeep below your income from taxes.

The English are one of the easiest factions to play. There are many ways to play. if you like rush type game take out the Scots first. Then go for the French. Or reverse that if it appeals to you. Just make an alliance with the one you plan to attack second. You can also turtle the game. Take your time and build up your cities and armies. Wait for the Pope to excommunicate someone then go in and attack them with his blessing. One thing I always do in the beginning of every campaign is camp a diplomat at Rome and make an alliance with the Papacy. Keep feeding him money every so often (I usually give 100 florin tribute every year) to keep your standing with him high. If it gets low just kick in a little more one time and that'll bring you up. As long as the pope is happy you can pretty much do whatever you want in the game.

For tactics I use a common one. A good defensive line of spear men and/or pike men and then a few archer units behind them. A couple of cavalry units for rear/flank attacks and chasing down fleeing enemies. And a General's unit. Keep them upgraded as much as possible and switch them out for better units as progress allows. I usually add a couple siege weapons for city attacks. The game's AI is no match for the human player IMO. Personally I prefer the mods. The vanilla game isnt near as good as the mods IMO. The Long Road is one such good mod. If you go to www.totalwar.org you'll find a lot of good info there about the game.

Play the Holy Roman Empire or one of those italian provinces like milan or such... then train a few assassins... and kill the pope over and over... lol...

The point of this is... if you dont like the pope... screw him up...

or go and take rome... that is awesome lol.. no more pope in rome.. the problem of doing this is... where is the papal states now?

dont worry if they excommunicate you... just go and kill more popes...

omg... i hate the pope so much in medieval II... if you dont want to do this... then play other faction like egypt, byzantium, one that isnt pope like at all...

Main tip is to focus on making money for the first 50 turns. This is best done my making better markets and farms. Biggest problem in the 8 or so long campaigns I've played is money. I usually get bogged down shortly after starting cause some dipshit neighbour starts attacking me, causing me to start pumping out more and more units, which raises their upkeep. As this goes on, I run out of money to build new/better buildings and fall way behind in technology.

Also, keep your armies small early on if possible. If the upkeep for a garrison ain't free, disband it. Take over rebel towns as soon as possible to add to income.

I don't bother with politics much. Just make some trade deals, say yes to alliances so they don't turn on you as quickly. Eventually, they and you will all kill each other anyways, it's just a matter of when and if you're ready.

I think in the beginning you want to scatter your diplomats early and get all the trade rights you can. At the same time build up ports and markets in your coastal cities, this'll help with income tremendously since trade revenue is the most lucrative. Also, like Postmortem said, don't underestimate merchants. The silk near constantinople, amber near denmark/russia and ivory near south egypt are the best, I think.

The diplomacy AI is annoying. Basically be prepared to be attacked by everyone, including your allies, at some point.

There've been a few cases where my cities are seiged and I'm completely and totally outmatched. At this point, I usually use one of my favorite cheesy tactics. The first is the use your longbowman and place stakes just inside your gates and the nearby walls. The stakes almost instantly kill any cavalry that touches it, which helps panic the enemy.

My other favorite cheesy tactic is to place cannons or catapults inside the walls next to, or behind, spearmen that are guarding just inside their entry point. While the spearmen are holding the enemy in place, I fire flaming ammo from the artillery at them. You'll lose spearmen from collatoral damage, but you'll absolutely demolish the enemy with the close range artillery.

It's also very effective to have cavalry exit from another gate and hit the enemy from behind while they're trying to enter your city. You can also have your infantry climb down ladders and siege towers to hit them from behind.

Another tip. Skip the vanilla game and try the mods. They are usually better than the vanilla version.

ok...heres a couple questions:

1)how come other christian factions wont ally with me? Only france has and theyre getting ready to break it and attack.

2)How can i use merchants effectively? The other merchants buy mine out lol.

3)How are other christian factions attacking me w/o getting excommunicated? Thats really lame.

I prefer to attack the Scottish then Irish and be in control of the whole area. Once you've done that, build up your navy and establish a beach head city in France. From then on, it is game over. Unhappy cities as they get larger is a pain though.

P.S. When defending, don't bother manning the walls. Keep your troops in the town square and destroy the enemy as they enter piecemeal.

1) Yeah I dunno. The way the AI works isn't always obvious (or rational). I think it may have to do with how their allies/enemies feel about your faction.

2) Building up agents is hard. For merchants, you might be forced to stand on out-of-the-way trade goods for a while until they gain experience. Alternatively you could try and find low level enemy merchants, then send your merchants after them. Taking one down usually adds +1. It also helps if you train the agents in a town that has a guild.

3)If you get a message from the pope warning you to stop, I THINK, the enemy gets the same message. If they're still attacking you despite that message and aren't getting excommunicated it might be because they have a really good relationship with the pope.

Also, don't forget about training priets and sending them out to convert heretics and increase catholicism in other territories. If they get enough piety they'll have a chance at being promoted to cardinal and that gives you more voting power in picking the pope.
