Hmm I wonder how the specs are compared and if they are not too different, if you'll be able to do some sort of modding or something to throw Windows 7 on the $199 MeeGo model =D

$110 more for Windows 7? Srsly? Maybe part of it is for bigger primary storage?

This actually sounds like some of the original Eee PCs... netbooks with tiny/slow SSDs running some Linux variant.

What size screen and how fast/slow is the SSD? At 2.1 pounds and being so thin, if the SSD is not dirt slow like those used on netbooks from a few years ago, then this might be decent if the battery life is really good.

Heck, why not make it $300 with a Zacate.

specs are pretty horrible 1.3 ghz single core atom. but as someone mentioned it has a ssd so for internet surfing it might be sort of useful.

its single core, the windows 7 version isnt a good deal at all, unless $300 list means $250 street

I don't see the point. A year and a half ago, I got a single-core TF-20 1.6Ghz AMD laptop at Walmart during BF for only $200. With 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, and Win7 HP 64-bit.

Was it 2.1 pounds, with potentially 5-8 hour battery life?

The system is more than fast enough for meego. I cant imagine running win 7 on it.
But at 200 bucks its a nice experiment. I spend more on hookers every week.

SSD will probably be a Kingston SSDNow S100 variant in 1.8" form factor. Performance should still be around 2x as fast as a 7200RPM laptop HDD. If the battery is 48WHr, battery life should be in the ballpark of 6-7 hours.

If you get it, do yourself a favor and remove MeeGo and replace it with Ubuntu. Don't put Windows 7 on it. It probably only has around 1GB of RAM, and the CPU is slower than a Pentium 4. At this price point it's good, though.

At $300, you're better off getting a Brazos netbook with the AMD C-50 APU. It's much faster than single-core Atom.

I spent more than that on gasoline last week. Of course I drove to Mississippi and back (from Wisconsin) and the wife's WRX takes premium. :awe: Didn't see any police patrols in Northern Mississippi, which may explain why we were only getting around 20MPG in that segment. Hey, I was just following traffic!

SSD will probably be a Kingston SSDNow S100 variant in 1.8" form factor.

Unless it was one of those mSATA or mini PCI/PCIe units, which were designed for really small devices like this.

would you get one of these? ive never tried meego, but they look sort of cool:

I got to Alpha test Meego on a tablet. It failed miserably IMO. There was a windows 7 key on the back of the tablet, and I said "screw this!" Windows 7 was running on that thing as soon as I got home from GDC. Sorry Intel, but the Alpha was unusable... Perhaps Intel has improved it some since then, but all I can say is anything not running Windows 7 is getting a thumbs down from me. Be it Android, Meego, OS X, IOS or many other glorified phone OS' that seem to be leaking their way into low powered laptops and tablets, they do not appeal to me.
