TLDR; Bought out all cards @ Microcenter, Newegg, Amazon, Bestbuy and so on, had family & friends ship them even more cards, they leased a warehouse, started mining operations, and they don't have enough power to run all the cards, so now, they have a ton of inventory sitting around, not in the boxes anymore, and this loser doesn't even know what the cards are, or how much VRAM is in them.

This is why it should crash hard, so punks like this can lose a ton of $$$.

I don't get why people are pissed about this.

So they are buying hardware to run software that you don't?
It's his hardware he can run whatever he wants on it.
And if he can buy a couple of hundred cards retail how surely other people can buy one or two?

Ain't that the truth. I purchased a 570 at $269CDN that's still on Back Order. It is now listed at $349. Hopefully it will come back In Stock one of these days though.

I don't wish harm on the guy or think he is selfish, but he is an idiot. He didn't do any planning and there isn't much evidence he thought about what he was doing beyond thinking he was going to be rich.

Honestly I don't believe the OP in that thread and think he is probably just trolling. I mean how do you buy 50k+ of hardware and have no idea how to properly use it? Same with renting out a place.

Yeah, I tend to think that it is a BS post after all...
So many things wrong with what he is saying, and nobody can be that dumb not to know power requirements of a building before leasing it out.

I just don't think people should be clearing the shelves off of the local B&M stores, then talk about returning them, since it is "within the return period". That causes serious harm to the B&M stores.

How long did it take for the mining craze to die down? I remember when the litecoin was hot, it took an entire summer for the price to go down on AMD 7970s and 290x

When it's no longer profitable to mine. As long as it's even remotely profitable the prices will remain high. My 480 exhibits the standard displayport bug, was thinking of getting 580 in hopes of fixing it, but not with these prices. It's probably going to be a while.

If true, what he did is beyond ridiculous. I'm so glad I managed to get my RX 580 before the rush crowd. Now they're absolutely nowhere to be found and inflated ~$100CDN in price (same goes for the 470/480 and 570 cards).

One word: schadenfreude.

I was sort of considering the same thing last year. A deal I had with an unlimited power setup fell through, so I didn't buy in on the hardware the way I wanted. I just bought some coins instead. Overall I think I would have made more money with the mining gear. Rent would have been a bit of a bitch though. At least I went through the trouble of sorting out exactly what hardware to buy, what power draw to expect, what load would be put on the AC, etc. Also I do not think a warehouse would be a great solution unless they introduced some great ventilation and had good security for the hardware.

Try not to hate on someone like that too much. He was taking the rational course of action. For every story like that, there are others who succeed in creating massive mining empires. The top ETH miner on nanopool commands 148,988 MH/s which is about the equivalent of 5191 Powercolor R9 390s @ stock. And you think someone who bought maybe 150 cards is a problem? Don't be ridiculous.
