Just got back from BB (circuit city wouldn't price match b/c OM didn't have any in stock :| ) and ended up getting 3 spindles of CMC Magnetics :| . The product number was 3202 xxx, and without any other media to compare to, the color -looked- black to me. Then again, this is my first time buying dvdrs. Anyways, the lip was raised. The dvdrs at circuitcity had a small lip, just a little nub over the edge really, and the ones from BB were raised. I guess I'm going to return these.

Damn that sucks. Whatcha gonna do with 75 el-crappo DVD's? They'll still be good for data at least. I've found the the CMC media is horrible for video, but haven't had any problems with data.

By the way, are you saying you picked these up at Best Buy via price match? If so you are the first person on this thread to mention buying them at BB. So beware people, get them at OM, CC, or Staples if you want to get the Ricoh.

Yeah, Best Buy had them at 29.99 apparently, and I was able to pricematch with no problem. They only let people buy 3, though.

I did just burn a disc and it plays perfectly fine on my norcent dvd player, so I'll just return the other 2 spindles. Or, maybe I could buy the 2 ricoh from CC, and return these CMC spindles in their stead...anyone think that would work? heh. The packaging -was- different, though...

But, are CMC really that bad, and ricoh that good? I've been reading that both can be good/bad, depending on the batches. (these cmc discs do feel cheap, physically, though).

I would just return the 2 extra spindles (Assuming you didn't open them) and go to staples or office depot and try there. I wouldn't try taking them back to another store because they might have different UPC codes. Keep a good mental picture of the container and UPC and make sure you don't buy the same thing again.

The CMC disks are generally pretty bad. If you go to dvdrhelp.com and search through their media database most of the bad comments are toward CMC media.

On BF I bought some Khypermedia +r's for free AR from Officemax that turned out to be CMC. Since they were free I didn't really care, but I wouldn't pay much for them. I figured I can use them to back up my mp3's and digicam pics. They are notorious for being bad for video.

This is apparently what you bought from BB
This is the media from CC.
Staple's media looks more like the BB media
OD's media looks more like CC's.

Yeah it's confusing. Grey vs black bottom. Small vs large lip. WTF knows

the ones I got from my local Staples were gray spindles..there were no black ones at that time..maybe when restock takes place..ymmv..Memorex does/did the same thing with their CDRs..some were ProDisc, some(majority now) CMC,(not sure if Ritek in their lineup) and Taiyo-Yuden. My 200 (2x100) Memorex CDRs are TY.

Well, tomorrow the deal will be over I'm pretty sure. I had to open the one to find out if it was ricoh/cmc and so left the others unopened, but almost all the bad comments about CMC I read at dvdrhelp.com were that they coastered a lot...except almost all the people (like, 99% of them) who said that had either sony or pioneer burners. My norcent isn't really picky about media apparently, it can play the video I burned just fine. Rest assured, I'm not going to buy more unless I get some crazy deal on them.

Got the gray bottom ones...hopefully they are Ricoh as every one have attested in the thread.

I got the discs from Amazon, turned out to be CMC, which I had a good feeling it would. I guess I'll use this for data.

I ordered the discs from Amazon and also got the CMC disks. Completed first burn on my Lite-On 411s tonight and the discs seem to be pretty good. No problems on my stand alone Sony DVD player.
