At Staples $49.99 SKU#381913 plus one bag of rubber
bands $.26 SKU# PLY12381 = $50.25 (free shipping).
Use coupon at checkout for $20 off. Has an additional
$20 Staples mail-in rebate on their site. This is an
excellent unit. I've had one for over a year.

Does anyone know what speed this drive supports for digital audio extraction? My burner supports 8x burning but my current cd-rom drive only supports dae at 4x, so I'm not maximizing the performance of my burner unless I burn directly off the hard drive. I'd like to be able to copy a disc at 8x. Here's the link to the drive at memorex. Thanks.

Memorex is suck. Poor customer service. No free toll number to call.

I have a 40X Memorex. The maximum rip rate I've seen it get to is 10X.

Be wary of Memorex though. Last year I bought my original 40X Memorex in April. It worked for a week then quit, so I returned it for a new one. In September, just 5 short months later, the replacement started acting up. It started by not reading certain burned cd's, then progressed to all burned cd's, and finally, it wouldn't read any cd. I tried cleaning it, but that didn't help. Eventually I contacted Memorex customer service. Over the course of about a month I placed several calls. Finally, after trying all they're "solutions" 10 or 11 times, they broke down and had me ship it in for them to run tests to see whether or not it needed to be replaced. Another month down the road, I got a package from Memorex. It was my cdrom returned with a message saying they couldn't find anything wrong with it. When I put it back in my computer, the drive wouldn't even spin up. It just made a low grating sound. I called them, gave them a piece of my mind, and finally got some semblance of the service I had originally expected. They paid for shipping, and shipped a new drive back immediatly. It was just before Christmas of last year when I finally got the replacement that I had asked for 3 months earlier.
One final thing, somewhere between the first time I called them and the last time I called them, they stopped their toll free 800 number customer service, and went to a long distance number.

I bought this drive when it was $25 a few months ago. 48x memorex. What is a good program to download to test the audio extraction speed? I have nero, but the burner is in the other computer... is there another program that just extracts audio into mp3's?

I can test for anyone that is interested. Also, I've had this same drive for 3 months or so with no problems. Has a neat little door that flips open when you eject the cd, which I like. Certainly reads better than the 48x cd players that Dell uses in their Gx1 and gx110 line And for 10 bucks... the head on my electric toothbrush costs more..

abracadabra1, that's not true. As I stated in my post above, my current no-name brand cd-rom drive will only support digital audio extraction at 4x. So If I want to copy a disc directly from my cd-rom drive to my 8x burner I can only copy it at 4x...basically I am only using half of my burners speed. So no, any brand will not do.

I have had a Memorex 48x since I first put my system together(4/99). It reads 95% of the burned cd's that I have tryed in it. The price of $10 is a hot deal, I order another from staples for my kid's system I'm putting together.
$10 for cd-rom is a no-brainer.

Wow, I think this is the second message I've ever posted here. Anyways, I bought this drive a couple months ago for around $20. It's loud as H@#LLL when spinning at full speed. But, it'll rip audio at 8x, with no errors.

I see the 20.00 rebate from Memorex for the HD
but where is the 20.00 rebate for staples?

I don't see anything advertised that suggests a
20.00 and 20.00 = 40.00 rebates for this hard drive.

i went to the staples.com website.

am i missing something?

Linh, a lot of times a friend will come over with some new cd's (or cd's that he thinks I might like) and I'll want to copy some of them before he leaves. Obviously I could copy twice as many cd's in the same time as I spent copying them at 4x.

I have a Memorex 48X from Costco for about a year now. The best CD ROM drive I've ever had, read almost everything, fast and relatively quiet, the tray shoots out real fast, kinda neat for some reason. Just been really reliable the past year, never had a problem. I don't know why people think they are POS's. For $10 I would definitely get it.

This is the first time I was notified of the problem with the email address. There is an old email address listed.

I tried to go into my profile to put the correct email address but it will not let me correct it.

What do I do to fix it?

Leo, Give AudioCatalyst a try. It is great for ripping MP3s from audio CD. It can access the online CDDB and get the track name info for you. It is very fast and produces great .MP3s.

You can install Nero on the PC that doesn't have a CD recorder in it. You just need to select "image recorder" for the burner. You can even make disk images this way and transfer them to the other PC for burning (if you are networked).

I may be missing something here, I see there is $20 off for rebate at the staple site. Is there a separate instore rebate for over $50?
