True but now Apple is really in the mix with their new chips 😀

i have been tempted by those M1 macbook pros

but the (first world) problem is that my 8 year old macbook pro still runs just fine!

that seems to be the difference between 25 years ago and today. 25 years ago, there would be a computer 2x faster than yours 2 years later.

Apple was using Motorola processors in 1992.

Back in the early 2000's (which I would consider "peak" Anandtech dominance) Apple was still using IBM PowerPC chips. Only Apple was really using them in desktops, though, so it was basically AMD vs. Intel vs. Apple. Just like today

Does anyone else remember what all the "cool" kids drove back during the ATOT glory days? I remember a lot of folks bragging about their Infinity G35's, along with the occasional BMW M3.

I used to drive an Audi A4 myself, but then I didn't brag about it much after it tried to kill me

I'd imagine that most ATOT'ers ended up having families and got SUV's, but I'm curious what would be considered to be a "cool" ATOT car today? A Tesla Model S, perhaps?

I think that a Chiron is out of most of our price ranges. Well... maybe not ponyo, but the rest of us anyway

You asked about a "COOL" car for an ATOT baller not an affordable one!

I'd say a Chiron convertible should be considered the bare minimum!

A bit more realistic ??

Yes and when you got the 450 slot one overclock going, then springing for a dual CPU motherboard. Two Slot ones!!1111one1

Abit BP6-2 - Dual socket Celeron MB

I had one but this isn't mine... never was able to get it fully stable with 2x fully recognized Celerons. Worked fine as a regular single-CPU BX chipset MB though fortunately.

Oh man I remember drooling over the idea of a dual socket CPU back when multi core cpus were not a thing. Don't get me wrong it would still be pretty awesome today but never found the justification for it as I rather just build 2+ separate boxes if I'm going to do that. My most likely case scenario where I want lot of cores would be for VMs so more boxes is better. I still want to fully upgrade my vm infrastructure and been saying that for years, but it's kind of a back burner project, financially.

I bought a BH6 300A combo after I read this article, as well as similar ones from other sites.
Never had a BP6, but, i kept that BH6 for a long time, upgraded to a 533a (which i ran at almost 900mhz for years, and then gave it to my little brother after I got my first Athlon XP setup.)

Best BX motherboard I had was the Abit BE6-II which I first ran paired with a Coppermine P-III 850 and later a Tualatin-core P-III 1200. (using a hacked BIOS)

While I seriously doubt it would still function (likely bad caps) I really do wish I still had the BP6 to at least add to my on the wall component display. I actually used it to build a system for a friends kid.

every alky post ever!

i dunno what cars are cool nowadays... i'm still trying to pull the trigger on something more comfortable/safe than my old subcompact honda

I wonder if Alky would be bragging about his Tesla Plaid now days, or if he's too cool for electric.

I can just see it now: "Bro, Teslas are just glorified golf carts. My M3 still blows it out of the water and has a better back seat. Even your mom agreed last night."

Bad/good news depending on your perspective.... having owned quite a few fancy and expensive cars (and driven many more) I can tell you that until you get into spending pretty dang good money on a car, they just don't come much better then a Honda. (even most low end models)

And Alky aside (lol) I'd rather get in a crash in a BMW then in a Tesla ... they have just a BIT more experience building cars.

I rarely build servers these days, but when I do, I typically go with the Xeon 2699 v4 chips. They're older (2.2ghz), but they have 22-cores each & you can run them duallie on older Asus workstation motherboards for 44-cores total! I get the chips off eBay for under $700/ea & throw a terabyte of RAM on them & they're just wonderful for upgrading small businesses that don't want to go to the cloud, but want to go virtual!

Meanwhile, I'm still rocking my desktop PC at home from a decade ago lol. The latest BIOS update was from 2013 hahaha. Hasn't crashed yet!

You need to test drive a Tesla. Go to Tesla website and schedule a Model 3 test drive. I can guarantee you will change your mind after the test drive. When you drive a Tesla, it feels like you're driving the future. I'm serious.

Tesla is the safest car on the road. It's a fact. There's no other car I rather be in than a Tesla in an event of a crash. You have far greater chance of suffering greater injury or death in a BMW crash than Tesla. Pretty much every data backs this up.

I still have mine and had it stable with 2 Celeron 533 for a linux setup back in the day. Even ran winXP x64 on it.

I also have the VP6 with a pair of 1Ghz PIII in it.

I'll put my safety in the hands of companies that have been building cars for more then a few years thanks.

Subaru for example gets better crash safety results then just about any other car but spinning off an embankment @ 100 mph I'll take a Benz or BMW every time. The Germans have been crash-testing cars at autobahn-speeds since before Elon Musk was born.

Tesla is amazing tech-wise, but crazy me I don't like the "giant smartphone" in lieu of a dashboard or having my car's operation/features controlled by the whim of a huge corporation.

But wth do I know? Heathen that I am I even like shifting my own gears!

It's all about physics. Tesla is the safest car in a crash test. People walk away from really bad high speed crashes in a Tesla. Physics doesn't care how long you have been building cars. Physics is the law. You can argue with emotion but physics say you're 100% wrong.

It has nothing to do with shifting your own gears or giant smartphones or any other BS. You can't defy physics. Tesla is the safest car because of physics. It's designed from ground up to be the safest car in a car crash.

I WAS able to get Windows installed and KINDA stable but not with SMP that actually resulted in any performance gains.

All I found that it did do was increase power draw and heat output. In benchmarks 1x Celeron 366 @ 550 was either the same or VERY slightly faster then 2x of the same CPU most of the time. (walked all over the slot 1 P-II 350 in my other system though!)
