I have a opteron 165 and gigaram ddr500. With 280*9 i get 2.5, but i want to take the proc to at least 2.8. What multipliers do I use? I dont understand exactly how to use them.
You need to read the overclocking guides, but to help a bit, try to set your memory timmings to auto and go higher on you fsb, make sure you divider is at 166 then get a64 tweaker and read the settings then start tweaking your memory for better performance.
Have you tested the cpu & memory maximums independently? i.e. have you set a low cpu multiplier (e.g. x6) & raised HTT until the memory fails a stress test of some sort (I recommend Prime95 blend test)? And similarly, have you set a low memory divider (e.g. 100) & raised HTT until the cpu gives out? Watch out with memory timings on dividers. Never trust the mobo to set these settings for you. Change each setting manually from Auto to the spd for DDR500. If you dont know what these are, set the HTT to 250MHz & memory divider to 200 (1:1) & use A64Tweaker to detect them all & write them down. Then go into the bios and set each one explicitly. Your bios may show the setting which will negate the need to use A64Tweaker. To get a 165 to 2.8GHz is quite ambitious & will need a higher vcore. How much have you raised this?
Do you think 2.8 is a given or something. Most likey, your chip is not capable of that speed without serious Vcore (which would require some exotic cooling), and mayby not even then.
No reason not to be happy with 2.65.
To find out your max OC, you first need to find the max speed of each individual component (HTT, CPU, RAM).
