HI,
I just finished building a new rig as follows
MSI Kt3 ultra mb
athalon XP 1800 retail
512 MB 2100 ddr mushkin RAM
Maxtor diamondmax 80GB hard drive
ATI 8500 LE 64MB Radeon
Netgear 10/100 network card
Lite on 16X dvd
Lite on 32X burner
Enermax case with 300w PS
I orginally put everything togethor without any problem. I had upgraded to the latest BIOS and drivers using the live update. I had just finished installing the last of my software. I started the computer and it locked up. Using the troubleshooting LED lights on the MB the error was supposed to be at the initializing memory level. I restarted and it worked 3-4 more times without difficulty. I then had 1-2 lockups which resolved with restarting. This was followed by a freeze at startup. Once again this was at the point of initializing the memory.
I called Mushkin and they fed-exed me a new stick. I put in the new stick and the computer worked fine. Once. After restarting it I once again got the same memory error which caused a total lock up. This happens before I can even access the BIOS.
It seems to me that the problem is with the motherboard and I was going to have that replaced (hopefully the memory sticks didn't get fried). Do you guys have any other suggestions. Its been a few years since I built an entire system.
One other thing before the machine died I opened up the system monitor utility and it showed the CPU as running at 1.1 Ghz. I thought the 1800 was supposed to run at 1.5 Ghz. Does it change speed during use? This is a retail chip that I have not modified in any way.
Thanks for any help
