Where'd you get pillows like that?

We got a tuft and needle bed recently. It does the job pretty well and its not any hotter than my previous pillow top coil mattress. Do note that this is just foam and not 'memory foam', so its firmer. It's made it easier to sleep on my stomach or side without my back hurting. However, because these beds are flat on top and you don't sink in the sam way your normal pillow may not work for you. Also best to ditch the box spring and got with slats.

My last one came from Sit N Sleep, but you can check online for Talalay Latex Pillows and find some.

Tons of useful info here: http://www.themattressunderground.com/

We have a full latex mattress. They are expensive but will last a lot longer than other mattresses. Memory foam and latex mattresses are heavy so you need a good supportive foundation.

We also have latex pillows. I'm a side sleeper and prefer the medium/firm. They are more expensive than conventional pillows but will last a lot longer. Ours are 5 years old and look like new. Do a Google search, they are available from multiple vendors.
We got ours from Walmart for <$30.

I agree with most of the ratings except the price. You can find them on sale or use a coupon for <$30.

I have one that is over 20 years old and still is comfy. It was for a twin mattress so its not as thick as my newer one, but even my ex wanted to take it, good thing she didn't try the newer one. She would end up on Americas Most Wanted until I got it back.

I have a by-now-pretty-old Tempurpedic that I'm sure wasn't designed to be "cool" and does, in fact, get a little sweatier than a regular mattress right under me during the warmest weather in the summer. But it's so freaking comfortable 365 days a year that they'll still have to scrape my dead, moldering body from it to make me give it up... (Mine was a hand-me-down from my mother, who decided to get one of those Dial-A-Number jobbies later on. I will say that if you like those, you probably wouldn't like MF, but I find those "air-mattresses" unacceptably soft even at their highest settings.)

Also fwiw, I've slept on a recent-model, "knock off" MF mattress at my brother's, and found it just as comfortable as the "real thing," so I'm not suggesting you should spend the $$ on a Tempurpedic, though you might want to look for professional reviews that simulate age/wear - the Tempurpedic is holding up well 15+ years post-purchase, but I don't know how well the knock-offs fare over the long haul. (Though it might be worth just replacing the knock-off as needed, even if they don't last quite as long; I really have no idea what any of these things cost these days.)

We got a Casper last year which is latex on top of foam. I liked it but the wife thought it was too hard. We replaced it with a pure memory foam mattress from costco and we have been happy. It isn't too hot and we spent less than $1k for a king.

Its hard to beat the Costco for the price. On sale the queen goes for $399 in store. I use to post about it in the hot deals section. They go on sale for $499 online, save the $100 go buy it in the store.

What kind did you get.

anything should work, but I'd advise going with something that lets the mattress breath a bit underneath--many slats as opposed to a solid wood base. Don't worry about the slight gaps between slats causing an issue with the foam as it settles.

Depending on where you live, especially if humidity/mold is a problem, the underside of that bed can get real funky, real fast, if you don't let it breath.

And of course never ever never ever never be duped into the box spring scam.

I use memory foam gel mattress and have no issue with it being hot.

I used a gel memory foam topper on a coil bed before that and that thing got hot. guess it depends on brand?

Does anyone know how latex beds affect those with latex allergies?

I suppose it depends on your sensitivity, but all of these beds will come with a cover, perhaps two layers of some sort of cotton-based textile. You can always get an additional hypoallergenic/water-wicking cover, as well, which should minimize/eliminate any contact with the mattress material.

Probably something you would have to personally investigate. Some shops will probably offer a trial period with free return/home pickup. Well, maybe.

Casper. /thread

  • Latex top with supporting memory foam lower allowing it to breathe and not get memory-foam hot
  • Factory-direct, no middle man, cost savings direct to you
  • 10 year warranty
  • 100 day return policy (free, they donate it to Salvation army who picks it up)

I tried a dozen different mattresses before buying the Casper. I do not regret my decision. If you choose to buy, PM me for a referral code which saves you $50 on the purchase.

Got our latex mattress from mattresses.net Talked with the guy and got what he recommended for our body types and sleeping style(this is important stuff). My lower back pain vanished and I sleep much bedder now. I also use their foundation. Having a king size bed is a hoot too.

I purchased a foam mattress from Overstock.com a couple years back for around $650. I purchased it based off of positive reviews. My wife and I love the mattress and it doesn't get hot. I think a big part of the issue is the type of sheets you decide to use. Buy some breathable sheets and the foam mattress won't feel hot. At least it doesn't for us.

Latex foam is where is at. Pretty much all the good stuff about memory foam, but without the shitty parts.

years ago got a 3" 5lb memory foam topper from a memory foam ebay store highly recommended from the atot memory foam thread.

didn't feel a diff vs my firm mattress.

after turning and flipping it over many times over the years, I got rid of it because the foam felt soft now. there was little resistance when I pressed down on it compared to parts where I didn't sleep on it.

felt no diff sleeping on plain mattress after years on memory foam.

then last year got a 3" latex topper.
again, felt no diff.

I think it depends on what you are comparing it to but a lot of places have such a high markup they aren't too bad. I got a 9" Queen latex mattress for $1300. I really liked that we could easily do different firmnesses for my wife and myself since we couldn't agree.

FWIW - I found my sleeping style changed considerably with a mattress change. I was 50/50 back and side which meant I went with a slightly softer mattress. Once I moved to latex it changed to 90/10 back side which you would usually want a firmer mattress for. Since the mattress was 3 layers of different firmness levels I simply reordered them from med-med-firm to firm-med-med to adjust the mattress to my sleeping style

As for heat retention I would put our latex mattress at every so slightly hotter than our previous pillow top but no where near a memory foam mattress

Yeah, I built a plywood platform king size (two twins pushed together) that sits 2 ft off the ground for extra storage underneath. I could probably modify it for slats. hmm. The main issue is that I use a waterproof mattress cover which is bed bug proof so airflow probably isn't going through it anyway.

Instead of getting a new mattress, decided to keep mine but remove a 1inch soft latex layer that I put in the middle (long story but bottom line is that it really softened the bed up when I first got it). Lately I haven't been getting the same back support since it's 7 years old. So now have a 6 inch heavy foam (2.8 cu ft) base with a 1inch and 3inch 32ILD tallalay foam layers. So today I put the 3 inch on top of the one inch to see if a thicker layer will do the trick (had the 1 inch on top of the 3 inch before).
If my wife doesn't like it we'll get her a twin topper for her side of the bed since I outweigh her by 75lbs, luckily we both like firm.

The cool thing about buying different layers of foam yourself is that you aren't throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Once you have your base and support layers solidified, you can fiddle with a final layer (different technologies, brands, etc) to really get it perfect for what you like. And it's cheap buying/returning a 1-2 inch layer at a time. Too soft? Buy a firm 1-2 inch support layer or topper. Too hard? Do the opposite.

Anyone have a cooling memory foam topper that they really like? I'd like to try one of those.

To soft? To heavy? To hot? Gel memory Foam?

With this years tax return I want to get a decent bead. I have been looking at memory foam. I need opinions

We love ours. Just make sure you get one with a "cooling" gel top/layer. We have a King Serta iComfort mattress, and we love it. Also, make sure you get a really good mattress protector because the "foam" can/will soak up all your sweat, fluids, etc like a sponge.

Our guest bedroom, we cheaped out and bought a Sleep Innovations memory foam from Amazon. No complaints heard either.

For what it's worth, I've had mine on a solid base for ~10 years (it's what I already had, is well-built, has drawers, and is still in great shape many years after I bought it, so I wasn't about to spend a lot of $$ to replace it.)

I'm sure it depends on where you live, but while NYC hardly drips with humidity like the South, Gulf Coast or coastal Northwest (10 months out of the year, anyway), it's hardly bone-dry either. I guess it might affect the slightly-excessive-warmth factor, but certainly nothing has ever showed signed of growing on the bottom, nor does it smell funny, etc...

Got me, haven't went near a foam mattress in decades I guess.

That being said, have had a few in the past.

And a few other ones, the wife probably would have a fit on a foam mattress from heat, she even gets overly heated and grumpy on a good box spring and mattress.

It appears from the posts they have came out of some fixes for the heat issues, but haven't tried one lately I suppose.
