We tried out a memory foam mattress for a few weeks and hated it. It had the cooling gel, but even with no covers and a ceiling fan we would sweat. I personally hate the you sleep "in" the mattress instead of "on" it. It made moving/rolling over very annoying.

We ended up getting a nice, non-pillow top inner spring mattress and love it. For the price difference, I could buy three of the innerspring mattresses, so even if it didn't last as long I'd still be money ahead.

The one I linked to is firm enough (for me at least) that I"m not 'in' the mattress.

We got a Casper last year which is latex on top of foam. I liked it but the wife thought it was too hard. We replaced it with a pure memory foam mattress from costco and we have been happy. It isn't too hot and we spent less than $1k for a king.

Exact same situation here, but Casper offered an additional latex topper for $20 shipping when I called to initiate a return. They also extended the trial period another 50 days. The topper helped but the mattress is still undeniably firm. We will probably still return it, which is a shame. They're a great company and I wish I could support them.

ya, it has to be firm. I like firm mattresses in general, but not rock-firm. I think the firmest of the memory foam sets aren't going to compare to the inner spring firmness, which is a great thing for me.

You get resistance + soft comfy. Sinking into the mattress was my primary concern with memory foam, but that has not been born out with the firm types that I have used.

I think my current one sinks in ~0.5 inch or less, which is more than enough. The heat is still noticeable, but it doesn't make me sweat.

Pretty sure this is the one I currently have:

http://www.wayfair.com/Best-Price-Q...10-Memory-Foam-Mattress-OLC-FMS-BPMT1003.html

Which is already priced well, but current discount (President's Day?) on top of that.

I've only had that for 6 months now, but it's been great. Prior to that, I used a Costco Novaform for ~5 years and never had an issue (Reason for replacing was because I moved cross-country and abandoned the Novaform, which I was reluctant to do, but it would have been more expensive not to)

The mattress we have is a cheap and nasty one, and I could feel the springs digging into my back. We bought a memory foam mattress topper (it's about two inches thick), now I can't feel the springs, so that was a win.

It feels a little weird and takes some getting used to (I sometimes feel like I'm floating in water with the body shape I end up with, bum pushing more into the foam seemingly than other body parts, so body takes a very gentle V shape when lying on back). It is a bit warmer than a normal mattress.

I've tried different memory foam and latex mattresses over the years, and they are just too hot for me. Last week I went back to an inner spring with a regular foam pillow top and my sleep has been much better. Whats cool is now they even deliver them like foam mattresses. They are compressed and rolled up, so just unpack and open the bag and they pop into shape in seconds.

I did not know this! Thanks for the info!

I sleep very hot, wife sleeps very cold. Got a Casper and it has been great. I find it cooler than our old pillow top in the summer.

Found it hard at first and they sent out a topper for free and that made all the difference.

i've had my Serta iComfort Intellectual EFX queen memory foam mattress for about a year now.

I've rotated it once. i think I need to rotate again because the side I sleep on seems to be getting too soft again and I sink further in.

paid $1700 for the damn thing and not sure it was worth it.

memory foam is NOT intended for really fat, overweight people. Spring/coils are still best for them.

Yeah, I built a plywood platform king size (two twins pushed together) that sits 2 ft off the ground for extra storage underneath. I could probably modify it for slats. hmm. The main issue is that I use a waterproof mattress cover which is bed bug proof so airflow probably isn't going through it anyway.

Instead of getting a new mattress, decided to keep mine but remove a 1inch soft latex layer that I put in the middle (long story but bottom line is that it really softened the bed up when I first got it). Lately I haven't been getting the same back support since it's 7 years old. So now have a 6 inch heavy foam (2.8 cu ft) base with a 1inch and 3inch 32ILD tallalay foam layers. So today I put the 3 inch on top of the one inch to see if a thicker layer will do the trick (had the 1 inch on top of the 3 inch before).
If my wife doesn't like it we'll get her a twin topper for her side of the bed since I outweigh her by 75lbs, luckily we both like firm.

The cool thing about buying different layers of foam yourself is that you aren't throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Once you have your base and support layers solidified, you can fiddle with a final layer (different technologies, brands, etc) to really get it perfect for what you like. And it's cheap buying/returning a 1-2 inch layer at a time. Too soft? Buy a firm 1-2 inch support layer or topper. Too hard? Do the opposite.

Anyone have a cooling memory foam topper that they really like? I'd like to try one of those.

the issues with airflow is the bottom of the mattress being trapped against that closed surface. waterproof cover or not--basically, such a surface will likely shed little droplets of water around and to the bottom of the mattress, where they pool and creating a nice little mold-happy environment.

We bough the top latex mattress from Ikea the MORGONGÅVA. It's fantastic. We spent a lot of time testing various mattress types and found that latex worked the best for us. Then we tried a bunch of different once including a number of brands that were more expensive than the Ikea one. Ikea had the best price/performance.

Been sleeping on the King (was one of the first 10" they made) for almost two years now and still love it. By far the best mattress I have slept on.

My 79 year old grandmother stayed in my room for a week at Christmas in 2014. She said her back felt better than it had in a very long time after sleeping on my bed.

I'm going to check out one of those Novaform toppers if you guys like em. My 32ILD latex seems to be a little to firm for my back, waking up a little sore. Oddly my wife things it's fine. My back just needs to grow a pair.

We ended up with a Serta Memory Foam bed. It was way too soft, so we got the company to exchange it for a firmer, cheaper model (also Serta). It was much better, but the memory foam remembers where I sleep.

My opinion is to stick to inner spring mattresses. I really like the concept of memory foam, but the premiums are way too high considering the risk involved. I feel like I sleep a lot better on a quality old-school mattress.

A year and half ago I got a Temperpedic, which was at or near the bottom of their lines. It wasn't one of the mattresses that slept cooler. Previously I had a very old Sealy coil spring mattress, and I suffered pains during the day and night. Now with the memory foam, those pains have gone away. Still I paid way too much for the mattress and foundation. About $1800. It is only 8" thick and I sink in it during the night. I wish I had gotten a firmer and thicker mattress. If I knew about Casper at the time, I would have tried it. The other negative is that it sleeps very hot, since I put a down comforter on top. I have night sweats. Well I prefer to sleep warm, this is a bit too much. At least I can lie down without pain which is a godsend.
