I got a memory foam mattress recently (Zinus 12" Queen) and while I really like it (and no longer wake up sore) it's really warm. I wake up slightly sweaty on whatever side was laying on the mattress.

So I'm guessing it's cause of lack of airflow and have seen there's mattress toppers that might be able to alleviate the problem. But on some reviews some people say the topper itself is warm. Ugh. So before I went and spent the money on a topper I wanted to see if anyone else has a memory foam mattress and has experienced this problem and what they did.

Talk amongst yourselves!

Its not an airflow problem. The foam absorbs body heat quickly. When your body gets cold, it generates more heat. Vicious cycle.
In the wintertime its actually kinda nice to have a foam mattress, in the summer I recommend not using a blanket, so your heat can dissipate faster.

As the foam heats up, it conforms to your body shape. That is the whole purpose. It gives fairly gentile support as it has lots of contact with your body (rather than a few high pressure points on a typical mattress).

But, as a side-effect of the large contact area with your body, there is no where for the body heat to go. After the foam absorbs the heat, it is just trapped there right next to your skin, tightly touching you in many locations.

The topper, if it isn't memory foam, ruins the reason to have memory foam in the first place. If the topper is memory foam, it won't change the fact that there is nowhere for your heat to go.

For that reason, I do not and will not ever have a memory foam mattress. Your best bet might be an under the covers blower fan. http://www.brookstone.com/pd/Bed-Fan-with-Wireless-Remote/826456.html?bkeid=compare|mercent|googlebaseads|search&bkeid=search|google|bidword|PRODUCT+GROUP|c|

Edit: be sure to read the long review on that page.

Get a gel memory foam topper.
I bought one of the zinus gel memory foam mattresses specifically because of the heat issues in normal memory foam and haven't noticed any heat build up.

Are you using no mattress pad at all? If not, you're probably right - a lack of air circulation more than the heat retention properties of the mattress. Try a cotton or poly mattress pad and see if it helps. (Not another memory foam "topper". That would make no sense.)

We use memory foam, then a mattress topper and then some sort of sheet on top of that, then a regular bed sheet. It stays a bit warm, but we sleep with a fan on every night for the white noise, and I don't get too hot.

We have a Leesa memory foam mattress and love it. I was initially worried about some of the reports of memory foam sleeping "hot", but I can't tell the difference between the pillow top mattress we had before and the Leesa. Plus, I sleep better on the memory foam.

Thanks for the responses so far guys (lol RossMAN that mattress is boss, though it only mentions heating that I saw).

I don't think I have a mattress pad; just the mattress itself and that's in just like a thin cotton enclosed bag. Basically like a pillow protector but for a mattress.

I have read that latex is supposed to be cooler but the several I've seen have been $200. I suppose considering my queen mattress was $180, $380 isn't terrible for a nice sleep system. I'd just hate to spend that on the latex topper and not have it help.

I've also seen the gel toppers; I think that's what my mom recommended when I mentioned the problem to her. Something like this maybe? Gel memory foam mattress topper. She did mention the cooler topper she saw was blue.

Hmmm. I'm leaning towards the latex topper right now. Ugh I hope it would work.

Figured I'd bump one more time to see if anyone else has a memory foam mattress and has had a "too hot" issue with it. I do like the mattress, way more than my previous one, but the sweating issue is kind of a bummer. I think I'm gonna go ahead with one of those latex pads but wanted to see if anyone else had any experience to chime in.

Thanks d00dz.

this explains my night sweats for the last 2 years straight. I lost a lot of weight though..around 50 pounds.
