Hi,

I'm thinking about purchasing a 256MB module for my ASUS A7V266-E (yea I know its old and i'm gonna buy a new computer -soon-) but I'm having some problems deciding what memory to choose.

Should I go with the

Corsair XMS2700 (2-3-3-6-T1 333mhz)
or
Corsair Value S PC2100 (CL2.5)

Can I even USE PC2700 Memory on the A7V266-e?

Thanks

Yeah, pc3500, 2700,2100 is all backward compatible (as I understand it).

Don't be fooled going from an KT266a mb to a NForce2 is not that big a deal.

Well, how about I purchase PC3700 memory, then I can use it on the P4 400mhz fsb motherboard, would'nt that work?

Those memory modules will relegate to your boards fsb, but if you want to overclock you can get a bit of juice out of them yet. Like the other guy said, the difference between the 266-E and an nForce2 board won't be night and day. I actually have the 266-E board but fried it so now I'm using a a7n8x which is an nForce2. I upgarded the processor so the difference is relative, but I like your plan on buying for the future. Get PC3200 or PC3500 and just overclock, don't bother spending a premium for the 3700.

But I would need the Pc3700 if I Purchased a Pentium 4 800mhz FSB motherboard, would'nt I?

Can the PC3700 memory co-exist with 2 PC2100 memory modules?
(i'm not going to move the PC2100 modules to the P4 though)

Thanks for the replies

PC3700 is rated at 466Mhz x 2 = 932Mhz which is more for overclockers.

PC3500 is rated at 433Mhz which is 866Mhz, again more than enough for P IV 800mhz.

And yes you can run the PC3xxx memory with your PC2100, but the memory will only run as fast as your weakest link; so you get PC2100 performance basically.

I found a solution to the problem

I'll buy a TWINX 3700 Package (1GB) and remove my 2 x 256MB PC2100 modules, and
when I buy a new computer I already have the ram I need

how about spend $20 for whatever PC2100 is on sale, then buy whatever is needed in the future? last year around this time a stick of 256mb PC2100 is $70, now it's $20, $30.

go figure how much cheaper would that twinX cost by the time you upgrade.

and going from 512mb to 768mb? i don't think you would notice anything unless you run 5 serious memory hoggin programs all at once...

Yea, I think i'll go for 2100 and buy a faster ram set when i buy my new computer.. 2-3 months time prices will probably have sunk a little.

Unless another factory burns down =)
