I have an asus a7n8x deluxe and just installed a barton 2500+. It easly overclocked to a 3200 with just changing the FSB to 200. Even though I set the FSB to 200, the memory frequency still remains at 166. This dosent sound right, shouldnt it be at 200?? When I change the memory frequency to 200 it locks up. What is the difference in the memory frequency speed and the FSB speed.

Thanks.

Your PC2700 is set to "SPD" - anotherwords it reads the speed from the chip itself. You can change this to "Auto" in the bios, and you can then set the memory to 200. But it may not work at that speed!

If you've got some PC2700 ValueRam, most likely it can't hit 200 FSB even though the Barton can. They are two different speeds that should run in sync with one another. So yeah, get some better (or PC3200) RAM and try again. For the time being, put the Barton back at 166

True, but depending on the brand of 2700 you may be able to relax the timings significantly (Vcore 2.8V ) and see where you get..

You might be suprised.

On the other hand, if you have some Value ram, you're in trouble. Go for 3200 or even some 3500 incase you ever jump back to a P4 or just want to do some overclocking.

yes I do have some 3200 crap memory, so why is my system able to run at a 200 fsb and 166 memory frequency and still post as a 3200?? Can some one explain what the memory frequency is. Also what is so good top of the line memory that is fast and has low latency even when overclocked?

Thanks.

Because when the bios recognizes your memory the memory reads back as 3200 regardless of what speed you are running it, but the mhz reading on the screen might be completely different.

Download CPU-Z, then run it and under Memory check the memory speed it will probably tell you PC3200 at 166mhz. Then check if you are running any ratios. Since you cannot run at 1:1 you probably have a ratio that is why your ram isnt running at its rated speed. Try to lower the latency to 2.5-4-4-7 and increase the DDR voltage to 2.7 or 2.8. See if that makes a difference and if you can achieve the 1:1 ratio. If you have 2 sticks, first try it with one if it works try with the other. It could be the case that one of them isnt up to task.

The system posting as a 3200 only has to do with the multiplier * fsb speed, it is not affected by your memory running at PC2700 (166) or even if you had PC2100 (133). But it is generally considered better to run at a 1:1 ratio rather than the 5:4 ratio (200/166) you are currently running at.

This is not the case on every mobo - no matter what multiper and fsb I run my processor at on my FIC AU13, it still posts and shows in CPUz as a 3000+, even though it's running at 11.5x200. On a Epox 8RDA+, however, the 2600+ running at the same 11.5x200 posts and shows in CPUz as a 3200+.
