Memory goes from 16gb to 8gb

Hi all,

I have 16gb memory in my pc, for some reason it keeps defaulting back to 8gb (system and bios say so, but cpuz says 16gb). I think it has something to do with overclocking my CPU because if i go to my bios and set the memory to a lower frequency or voltage higher it goes back to 16gb. but then at some unknown point it switches to 8gb again. frustrating as hell.

I am on Win7 pro 64bit
Asus pro P67
2600k CPU
SSD
Gtx 560 2gb

I have read a few bits and pieces about it and am hoping you can find a solution without having to take my CPU and H50 off and reseating.

Thanks in advance

make sure all your dimms are fully seated. those dimm sockets on the newer asus boards only latch on one side and if it isn't seated all the way, it wont register the ram. I had this problem myself with an X58 sabertooth I'm currently using. I was seeing only 2 out of the 6gig I had installed.

Most likely you have an issue with 1 of the following: a BIOS setting, the RAM, the slots on the MOBO, or your memory controller. Reseating your CPU sounds like a great place to start.

FWIW, if you warm the CPU and H50 up really well before you pull it, the TIM should separate more cleanly. I have had good luck reusing it a few times if you are careful and smooth it out some when you reinstall.

Most likely a PSU issue.
If you lower the freq or up the volts it starts recognizing it again. That would indicate it isn't a seating issue or a memory controller problem unless the CPU is bad as it contains the memory controller.
I would put everything to stock specs and run it and run some games to tax it at stock clocks (CPU/RAM/Video) and see what happens.

Hi wangstang, 850w gigabyte.
I have tried reseating memory chips with no change.

Can't believe I didn't think to reset all settings to stock, I will give that a go today!

If that fails I guess I will just have to take it all out, thanks for the tip on seperating cooler and CPU.

Thanks all

I tried reseating first too, but unless you firmly press the dimms all the way in, it may not work. I don't like these sockets asus uses, too easy not to seat correctly. I prefer sockets with latches on both ends. The way these are designed, you slide one end under the retainer, push down until the latch clicks into place and it still can have the side with the retainer higher and not making good contact.I had to push down on the opposite end from the latch even after it clicked into place. It's a screwed up design if ya ask me. just push down until the dimm stops moving.

I have the same problem. Run 12GB on my Asus P6T Deluxe with i7 970 OCed to 4.6GHz. But I tried adding another 12GB. System won't recogize anything over 12GB when OCed to this point. But running at a slower clock (don't recall exactly, I'd say around 4.2GHz) it sees all 24GB. Using a 750W PSU. Even at full load, it only draws around 350W. So it never occurred to me it could be a power issue.

I don't see why oci'ing the CPU is resulting in memory not being read, does anyone know if memory settings automatically change with the new asus bios? I have my CPU at 4.5'but will try a drop to 4.2 and see what happens.

Going back to checking your power supply's ability to keep up with the system when you over clock....You need to look at the Amps that are being pulled as much as you look at the Watts. There should be a label on the side of of your power supply that has a chart on it that outlines the total amps and wattage per "rail".

Pretty sure it's the overclocking. I had the same issue until I drop my overclock down a bit. I think since the memory controller is on the processor it's more prone to issues at high OCs.
