Memory height issue

I've got an older computer that I'd like to overclock. This is the current setup:

motherboard: Abit IP35 Pro
cpu: Intel qx7650
heatsink: Intel original heatsink and fan
memory: OCZ Reaper (PC2-8500)

I'd like to overclock this cpu, but the Intel heatsink and fan is insufficient. The problem is that the memory is so tall, I'm not sure if there is an air cooling solution that would clear the memory, and still allow significant overclocking. I know this is old equipment, but does anyone have a recommendation?

i dont see why a tower sink will have problems if u have it exhausting out the rear, and put the fan on the opposite side of the ram.

Cooler Master Hyper 212 is your budget solution... just mount the fan next to the exhaust port.

A mid priced solution is a thermalright Macho which has a shifted tower

it doesn't even touch the ram.

A pricey solution is probably an AIO, like a Corsair H80...

don't have anything useful to suggest, but I had to have this memory because of how awesome it looks.

It's odd how the memory that only extreme users would even consider buying winds up being incompatible with the majority of aftermarket heatsinks that said extreme users would want to use. lol. I probably won't get memory with such stupidly tall heatsinks again ever.

Good luck on your search!

If you want cheap performance, don't spend money on a high-end air cooler for that rig. Spend it on a G3258 combo (OK, you'll have to buy DDR3 RAM too, but it's fairly cheap). Much better bang-for-buck. Plus, you can overclock the G3258 on the stock (copper-cored) heatsink it comes with.

Core2-era machines really aren't worth upgrading (unless you drop in a sub-$50 video card into a refurb PC to make it into a HTPC, for example.)

Thank you everyone for the advice! I'm surprised that anyone even remembers this old gear. Back in its day, this board was the ultimate o/c board, and was a big improvement over the old days when overclocking required solder and alligator clips lol.

About the only thing I use this computer for is playing WOW on a 19" monitor. The upgrades I've made for under $150, including one of the fan/heat sinks recommended here, will easily allow me to keep using it for another year (including Windows 10, if I decide to use it).

Thanks again.

For what its worth, I had clearance issues when I had my H80. I ripped the ram heat sinks off with a pair of pliers and I did so with extreme prejudice. It solved my clearance issues. The heat sinks usually aren't needed. They are a marketing thing.

I think you are right about the heat sinks on memory. To be honest, I've never gotten the rated performance (8500) out of these sticks on this board. I suspect either the board isn't capable of it or I don't know how to do it.

I ended up buying the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo for about $16.00, and have been able to get 4,000 out this old stuff. I'm very happy! Thanks for the help everyone.
