Lower supply due to downsizing of production plants because of the weak economy.

Mushkin recently announced their quarterly quotas have been met. Not sure if its relevent but it could be interpreted as they aren't rushing alot out the door IMO.

It isn't just you, that's for sure. I went to NewEgg and ordered a 512MB stick of Corsair XMS PC3200 last night for $104... today I went to their website and it reads $118 (!) for the same product... ouch :Q

It could be because the exchange rate for US dollars is down. Lower value of dollar=higher prices of foreign goods.

Yes, I read that is supply and demand. There's a lot of demand for pc3200 in particular and there may not be enough this year.

Yeah I noticed this to, I paid $87 each for (2) 512MB PC3200 Kingston ram dimms at newegg earlier this month. Now they are $92 each and out of stock.

I've heard that the companies that are making the chips are/have been selling them at a loss because they are/were getting government subsidies. Now those subsidies are drying up and companies either have to raise prices or go out of business.

As summer presses on they always go up before late Aug/early Sept when people start buying back to school systems.

you also seeing responses to the court actions initiated by rambus, where many of the memory manufactors are now having to pay royalties. And, new tarrifs on memory chips (aimed at countries with gov't supports) are raising prices anywhere from 5-40%. buy now and don't wait.

the US just started taxing the hell outta the korean drams that were coming into the US. They broke some kind of trade treaty and a heavy tarrif was put on the DRAMs to bring the prices back in line. Had to do with them selling drams under cost then getting money from the korean govt to keep them afloat.

Not that the US doesnt do this itself in several ways, notably in agriculture, wood, steel, and a lot more. As does the EU. But damnit we cant allow OTHER countries to manipulate "free trade". The tax doesnt put the prices anything like back in line btw, the position is no better than before - just swaps (and bloats) the artificial advantage from Korea to US, and making memory more expensive rather than cheaper.
