Memory Prices

I'd like to upgrade to 1gb, but these prices are insane. I paid $154.50 shipped from Newegg for my Corsair 2x256mb TWINX3200LLPT on May 5, 2003. The same set of RAM is now over $200 at Newegg. Shouldn't the same technology get cheaper?

Should I just go ahead and buy a gb now, or will these prices start falling any time soon (within the next few months). Some people had mentioned June-July, but with June being only a few weeks away, I find a 25%+ price drop hard to believe.

They're fixing the prices to make DDR2 more appealing since it doesn't offer the performance benefits that warrant the price.

the best deal right now is Mushkin PC3500 Level 1. 2-3-3 timings and it's only $150. You can get either a single 512MB stick or 2x256.

actually, this is the stuff to get link cheap, high frequency (really only good if you're looking at overclocking) and its getting killer reviews from users, some are hitting just under 300mhz with it.

Heh, "insane" is relative. I remember paying $128 for 4 1MB memory sticks back in 1990 or 1991 (for a superfast 386/33Mhz system). 512MB of that stuff would have cost over $16,000! Now that's insane.

In the late eighties I upgraded my Kaypro "portable" from 512KB to 640KB of system memory for $80. That's $640 per megabyte. 512MB of that stuff would have run about $320,000. Kind of helps put things into perspective...

I don't see why they're already pushing DDR2. There are no DDR2 boards even out yet. I don't see how they expect to make more money by increasing ALL memory prices. They'd sell more with lower prices.

That is interesting, but it's CAS 3. I'm not positive, but I believe my TWINX3200LLPT is BH-5 and it's been running perfectly at 2-2-2-5 for 11 months now

Yes, that's what I'd been looking at, except I already have a nice set of 512mb's of RAM, so I'm looking at the Level One 2x512mb PC3200 instead (I run stock, and the PC3500 has slower timings). The Level One 1gb 2-3-2 is $272 or something, and it was only $248 a couple weeks ago! Grrrrr

Oh Pauli did you get it easy. I remember paying over $100 for 4K of memory. My current 512MB would have cost me over $13 million back in the early 80's
