memory question..go w/256mb of pc100 or 128mb of pc133

I just purchashed and installed 128mb stick of Crucial PC133 cas2.I originally had a 128mb generic stick of PC100 cas3 (I assume?). After installing the new memory stick, Im sure there is improvement, I cant really tell, so my question is: Should I just go ahead install the 128 mb of PC100 and to give myself a total of 256mb of PC100 (since the PC133 will revert to 100) or is the 128mb of PC133 still better?

I'd go with 256mb @ 100

The speed difference is probably negligible, but having that extra 128mb will allow you to keep more stuff open.

Not to mention some programs (the memory-intensive ones) will run faster with the extra RAM than they would with the little speed boost (I think)

How far can the PC100 memory go? I know mine can do 133 at CL3. Other than that it depends on what you do... if you play mostly games I'd stick with the 128MB@133+ (also what mainboard do you have?). I have 256MB@133 CL3 and really don't notice much of a difference in many apps.

I have an Abit BX6 r2 Mb..play mainly games on this PC......
Also have a Hercules MX vid card.....I currently have my Cel566 O/C to 876 mhx...Got a little further in bootup process when I went 112/8.5. I was somewhat hoping that the new memory could bring higher o/c speed but oh well.

the price diference between 256mb of PC100 and PC133 is negligible. put the extra money and get PC133 256mb (maybe youd have to get 2 modules if they are cheaper seperate).

It depends on what os you're using as to how much ram is really necessary. In Windows 98 or ME, 128mb will probably be fine, but you can never have too much ram. If you running Windows 2000, there's a BIG speed difference between 128 and 256mb (256 is much, much nicer). If I were you, I would definitely put in the second 128mb stick rather than just let it sit around no matter what os you're using. As you've noticed, the difference between PC100 and 133 is really not very noticable. But, I bet you'll be able to notice the difference between 128mb and 256mb.

I would rather have 256MB. If your PC100 doesn't like running at 112MHz, then you'd either have to clock it down or remove it. I'd rather clock it down too. If you frequently max out system resources and free memory, your system probably relies heavily on the swap file. The performance gain from decreasing swap file use by having the extra 128MB RAM will be very noticable. Also, most games recommend a generous amount of free RAM. However, if you somehow run fine with 128MB with space to spare for your games, then you might want the extra speed instead.
