Memory Question

Im gonna get a new rig together. I was thinking of gettin 256 MB of Pc800 RDRAM. Would this be overdoin it?? I have 256 MB of SDRAM in the rig I have now. With RDRAM being that much better than SDRAM. Would 128 MB be good. I really only use my computer for gaming and the internet. Would the extra 128 MB be needed or just overkill.
Specs would be: 2.0 P4 128 or 256 MB RDRAM 32 MB Geforce GTS.

Depends on your OS IMO. You might be able to get awaw with 128MB
if you're using Win98...

Most Likely it will be dual or maybe triple boot: 98se or ME and W2000pro. Maybe XP. I would try linux but all my software is for MS OS.

If you are going to run Win2K or WinXP, I would recommend going with 256MB of RAM. 128MB is a little sluggish.

It is also advisable to buy a higher amount of RDRAM at the start, since RDRAM needs to be in pairs; a P4 system almost always has 4 RDRAM slots. After the initial RIMMs, you can only make one more upgrade to RAM.

I recommend not using RDRAM at all and just going for an Athlon DDR board. (Perhaps even the *gasp* Tyan dual Athlon boards.)

The reason? RDRAM is expensive, and supported mainly by Intel's Pentium 4, also an expensive product. ANd furthermore, the performance from the P4 is limited by the memory, so if you insist on RDRAM, wait for the 1066mHz, not the 800 mHz.

Athlon's kill the P4.
