Is it worth the extra $10 for the KVR400? I just bought the KVR333 from OM, not sure why other than I may want my server to have 1GB vs. 1/2GB.
My server is an epox 8K5A2+ using the KT333 chipset and will probably never get beyond fsb333.

On Kingston's site where do you see the KVR400X64C25/512 @ 59.99 after MIR? I see it @ $115 before MIR..

@shley

That's a KVR400X64C3/512.. not a KVR400X64C25/512.

And the difference being? NOTE: to use these two links, right click and open in a new window.
C25
C3
It appears the difference is the C25 means CL2.5 whereas the C3 means a CL3

Here's my question...

The 512MB DDR2700 PNY stick at Bestbuy.com lists that the speed of the memory is 133MHz. Is this a misprint? It has a slightly different product number than the CompUSA stick which lists at 333MHz. Bestbuy is closer, so can someone confirm that this is just someone goofing or not?

Have an old Compaq (7360) that has 56mb memory. Need to upgrade badly. Runs on PC100 processor. Ordered Kingston KVR-PC2100DDR/256 a while back (AT deal ) but after trying to install it, I realize now it doesn't fit. Or can some of you that deal w/this stuff everyday enlighten me? Can this work or not?

Mods, please move if this is posted in the wrong forum.

PC100 is NOT the same (nor compatible with) PC2100 ...

PC100 is SDRam (Synchronous Dynamic RAM). PC2100 is DDR (Double Data Rate) Ram.
PC100 works at 100Mhz, passing 64bit per clock cycle.
PC2100 works on a 133Mhz motherboard, and is still 64bit, but it uses a technique that allows it to double the throughput to 128bit per clock cycle (hence the double data rate) once on the up stroke of the clock cycle, and once on the down)
PC100 therefore, can handle 100Mhz*64bits=64 Mbits/s=800MB/s
PC2100 can handle 133Mhz*64bits*2(DDR)=17024 Mbits/s=2128MB/s

Unfortunately, you'll need to stick to PC100 (assuming this is a desktop) ... there are (warm) special offers next week from OM for PC100 ... (you can use KVR133Q... memory as well, since although its designed for both 100Mhz, and 133Mhz...)

According to the memory configurator on PNY.com, The Compaq Presario 7360 can take any PC100 sticks upto 256Mb. (maximum of 2x256).

Bit late I realise, but next time, I'd recommend that you check with the manufacturer, and use their memory configurator tool on their website, to confirm compatibility ... (all manufacturers have them on their website) ... I tend to use the one on PNY.com, since it doesn't try to sell "Manufacturer certified" at a 20% surcharge (like Kingston does)

OK, I understand that. Now, can someone please answer another n00b question? What's the difference in SIMMS and DIMMS memory? My specs call for 168-pin DIMMS board. Can I get by w/168-pin SIMMS board?

Thx.

SIMM=Single Inline Memory Module..DIMM=Dual Inline Memory Module ..
you can't mix/match two(or more) different types of modules...that 7360 K6-2 powered comp is seriously slow ..even a 600 Duron is a significant increase in performance..you've got a stick of pc2100/256MB ..if you can get a Fry's combo you'd be better off building up a new comp...these forums @ AT are very helpful ..you can find deals on just about anything needed to assemble a fairly quick and inexpensive rig..good luck

So 2 168-pin SIMMS modules would work if I remove my 1 168-pin DIMMS board?

no..but from here you will see the type/size your 7360 can use. SIMMs isn't even in the mix for your machine. Read here about DIMMs. Your 7360 can only handle 2x256MB sticks total with the removal of the 64MB. But that is not a very cost-effective upgrade. You could scour the FS/FT forum for that but..as I said..not cost-effective. Not sure where you are located geographically but ..those motherboard/processor combo deals at Fry's are very good deals pretty much.

ScrapSilicon, I think he may be thinking SIMMS=SDRAM, DIMMS=DDR Ram ... (especially, since there is no such thing as 168pin SIMM ! :-D)

The Compaq has 64mb, probably the original 7gb harddrive, the original 15" monitor, maybe a CDRW ... and is probably used for email, surfin, maybe a little Word or Excel ... but thats it ....

in which case, adding_any_ memory will result in a huge speed increase as the paging will cease ...

256Mb SDRam (DIMMS) are available on ebay for around $30-40 ea... or around $55 in store AR ...
adding a single 128Mb to the existing 64Mb would be a huge improvement in speed

What the crucial website doesn't make clear, is that just about _any_ PC100 stick is going to work (so long as it's not 144pin SoDimm :-D)

If it was my machine, I'd either
a) max out the memory on this using eBay ... (or at least add 1x 256mb)
or
b) I'd replace the entire machine with a new one from Dell (for $275 AR) ...

However, to answer the original question, just about any PC100 SDRam stick will work ... it doesn't have to be added in pairs ... they don't have to be the same size ... they don't have to be the same manufacturer ...

to Hoss WTC; I may have been overly optimistic when I posted the Patriot Memory deal. There is a thread over at Overclockers Forums about this memory. (too many pictures, it loads slow on dial-up)

The short form is that the red heatsink Dual Channel kits have worked great.

The silver heatsink Extreme Performance memory has worked for one of the two people who have posted their results. The memory that would not run at spec was RMA'd directly to PDP Systems Patriot Memory and replaced with good memory; with red heatsinks.

I have a pair (not a DC kit) with silver heatsinks but still no CPU and mobo. I hope I have the good stuff.

Supposedly the good stuff was built with "no longer obtainable" Winbond BH-5 chips a couple of months ago. If my memory won't do 2-2-2-5, then I'll RMA and probably get the equivalent of the new Mushkin Hi Perf memory with BH-6 or CH-5 chips.

Good Luck BadSweetums

OK, here's what's happened in the last 24 hrs.

Found on eBay: 2 256mb SDRAM SIMMS (not DIMMS) which I (dumb?) bid for and won. Cost me $62 shipped. The item is entitled: Two 256MB PC133 SDRAM SIMMs (512MB total)

So, albrandwood or ScrapSilicon, is it or is it not usable on my current machine?

albrandwood, my computer actually only has a 2gb hd. I have a 160gb hd from the AT deal a few days ago ready to go in.

So if everything "fits", I can have a nice upgrade to 512K RAM and 160gb hd for less than $100.

Thx again for all your help.

ok ... PM the ebay item # ... and I'll check ... but you may have made yet another mistake ... The Dimms/Simms may not be an issue, since I do not believe that there is such a thing as a 168pin Simms (they disappeared with 32bit memory) ... However, you may have compatibility issues due to the fact that PC133 is not always (though it can be) compatible with PC100 motherboards (specific model of stick is relevent here) ... Although, the final (& true) test is to try it ... if they are incorrect you could always dump them back on ebay ;-)

As for the 160gb hd ... you may have issues regarding the size of the drive ...
older motherboards / Bios don't support that size disk ... it MAY see 120gb, it MAY see less ... if it does see 120gb, then you could live with that, if you want to exceed 120gb, you'll need a PCI IDE controller anyway (under $50 - even from CompUSA). To boot off it, you'll want to install XP, if you want to use it as a second drive, then you can probably survive with your existing OS... though I'd recommend upgrading to XP, as it's so much better ...

Eitherway, remember that with the K2/500 processor, its still not gonna be able to play games, or anything else thats processor intensive ... but with 512Mb, it should be a lot more responsive when switching between programs etc ...

@shley

PS: Even experts screw up with ebay ... (anybody want 4x 256mb PC100 Notebook memory? - work fine - as long as you have a 256mbit motherboard :-/)

@shley,

Can't pm you. Does your profile have to be changed, or am I missing something here?

Never mind. I see the icon now.

I'll try it again, @shley
