I just took the plunge recently and went to Vista. Problem is my system is a bit sluggish with only 1GB of RAM. I'm looking to upgrade to around 4GB of RAM and was wondering if you guys could give me some suggestions on what would be compatible and work the best.

Here is what I'm looking at getting:

I've listed my specs below... Thanks for the help.

Dell Inspiron E1705

Intel® Core? 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB)
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce? Go 7900 GS
120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Windows Vista 32-Bit & 64-Bit

Cheers!

Check before you buy, I seem to remember that the E1705 can only go up to a max of 2gB of ram.

You can probably go more - just no higher than 2GB per DIMM. I have a Core Duo in a 945 series chipset with 2.5GB of RAM installed.

Are you actually running a 64-bit OS? If you aren't, your machine won't be able to use all 4GB of RAM due to memory addressing in 32-bit space. If you are running a 64-bit OS, go ahead and get 4GB (2x2GB in a kit or separately). Don't worry about matching stick sizes for dual-channel (ie: going with 3GB (1x1GB, 1x2GB)); you're computer will still run the RAM in dual-channel asymmetrically.

What you picked out should be fine.

4 gb would be a waste since i think 32bit vista only uses 3gb max

After doing some research it appears the E1705 can go up to 3.25GB of RAM. I will be running Windows Vista 64-bit, also. With that in mind, is going with 4GB of RAM worth it? I do have another Dell laptop with 1GB of RAM in it. Would putting a 2GB stick in with the already installed 1GB stick cause any problems on both laptops? Or would I be better off with 4GB in my E1705 even though I'm not utilizing the entire 4 GB?
